Enzo Maresca has warned Robert Sanchez his Chelsea place could be under threat after another blunder.

The Spanish goalkeeper has had a season marred by mistakes for the Blues with five errors that have led directly to goals, the most recent in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Manchester City. Sanchez rushed out from his goal to challenge Erling Haaland but ended up being easily chipped by the Norwegian superstar. Although Maresca had consistently supported Sanchez, he conceded for the first time that he might contemplate benching the struggling shot-stopper.

In the post-match press briefing, the Italian confessed: "Robert, for sure, is completely aware he has to do better. He knows perfectly. At the moment it is like this. The good thing is he is the first one knowing, aware that he has to do better...we trust Robert for sure. He is completely aware he is making mistakes at this moment. We trust Robert. We have one entire week and we will see the reaction for the next game."

Sanchez - a £25million signing from Brighton in 2023 - has managed just four clean sheets in 21 Premier League appearances for the Stamford Bridge club this term. But his worrying form could spark a U-turn from Maresca, who had expressed his unwavering trust in the 27-year-old just a week ago.

After the victory over Wolves, Maresca said: "Fourth mistake leading to a goal? And how many times has he saved us? I think more than four. No problem. Mistakes happen to him, to the strikers, central defenders, no problem. Robert is doing well."
