Ian Wright has urged Manchester United to go out and sign Liam Delap from Ipswich Town in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea are very interested in signing the 22-year-old striker, football.london understands, with the Manchester City academy graduate enjoying a fine debut season with the Tractor Boys in the Premier League. In 23 top-flight matches this term, Delap has struck nine goals and provided two assists. In fact, Delap has been directly involved in 11 of Ipswich's 21 league goals this season.

The Blues considered making a move for Delap in the January transfer window but it would have been very complicated to get a deal done. Ipswich were desperate to keep hold of their star attacking player as they bid to avoid relegation in their first season back in the Premier League. Chelsea were patient, though, and are prepared to wait until the summer to address their need and want of a striker, with Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig also an option for the west Londoners.

Man United have also been linked with a move for Delap, who is attracting interest from all around the Premier League with his performances this term. United's two natural striker options of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled in front of goal so far during this campaign - with just five goals combined between them in the league.

"Go and get Delap," Wright said on the most recent episode of Wrighty’s House, when chatting about United's attacking issues. "The thing is he's got that hunger and disrespect for everybody and it just feels like the kind of player they need.

"They need a hero like that and he is a hero waiting to happen. He is hungry."

Delap himself has insisted on numerous occasions that he is not focusing too much on what his future holds but with aspirations of being named in next year's England World Cup squad, a move away could be beneficial from a personal point of view. Chelsea have been left with just Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu as their orthodox No.9 options for the remainder of the season, with Christopher Nkunku often being used there but to Enzo Maresca's own admittance, he has been playing out of position there.

Jackson and Guiu - in what was a nightmare turn of events for Chelsea - both injured themselves in the win against West Ham United last week. "Yes, absolutely; before the last game, we had two strikers, Nico and Marc," Maresca explained last week when asked if he is confident the club have enough cover up front.

"Sometimes we adapt also Christo there but in case both of them are out, we are going to find a different solution." Maresca then went onto explain how Cole Palmer could also be used there if needs must: "Christo has played already as a nine. I had Cole playing as a nine in the past. We can find some different solution.

"It's bad luck that from the same game, two strikers both have an injury. Fortunately the Nico one looks quite good so it’s not a problem. It's a shame for Marc.

"The reason why Marc was still here in January was because I can see, day by day, that he is growing, improving, getting better. It is a shame now that he is injured. The future will for sure be 100% with him because he is a very good player."
