Erling Haaland contract sends transfer statement and trust message to leave Pep Guardiola and Man City thrilled
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola cut an understandably delighted figure when he faced the media on Friday lunchtime in the aftermath of the bombshell Erling Haaland contract news.
The City striker has agreed a staggering 10 year contract extension which will keep him at the Etihad until 2034. The news is a huge filip to City and Guardiola, who agreed his own extended deal earlier in the season.
The City chief spoke at length about the implications of the Haaland deal in a detailed press conference. Here's every word he had to say.

How big of a statement is the ten year contract for Haaland?
"Absolutely. It's the trust for the club to Erling. Because you never know what can happen in the next year. But the club knows perfectly how professional he is. His commitment in every single game and every single day to show his talent. And of course for him, because in 10 years, you never know what's going to happen. It's a long, long time. And always in the short careers, you have to say, OK, stay we'll see what happens. And he proved what he wanted. And the trust, as I said before, was the trust with the club."
You're a manager. It's your job to get more out of players. What can he improve on?
"Many things. Of course, the club and the team, myself as a manager, we have to create an environment, create a lot of moments that he can intervene in when he is unstoppable. Because there is the best. And we have to, of course, in the relation and more than that, understand the game in general, what happened during the game, what are the decisions you have to take, you have to make. But I think he's so young, still young, and I'm pretty sure he's mature, that playing games and games and games is going to happen naturally."
What motivates him? Is it trophies? Is it personally to get better? Is it milestones like goals?
"I don't know. I didn't speak to him about what is your motivation. I think it's winning. The next game is motivation, score goals. I know he helped us a lot being there and score goals. But, yeah, I think when... I don't have the feeling that there's a guy with a contract to say, OK, now I have this, I'm going to take a nap. I don't think it's going to happen. I think he loves to play and he's a huge competitor. But at the same time, the good moments and the bad moments have the ability to get rid of immediately. His mindset is really good to forget what happened, the good in the bad, and think in the next."
Have you ever known of a player who would commit their future to a club or anything like this?
"Have you seen a player extend 10 years contract? I think he comes from Norway. I think maybe the weather here is better than when he was born. And he settled perfectly. I think what happens is that he loves the club, the people he's around. He loves the Premier League. He loves to be here with him and his partner. Now he's a father [his partner is expecting a baby], so... I think he visualises there is no better place that I could be right now in the next 10 years, I would say. And that's why he and his family decided to do this step."
Were you tempted by 10 years yourself when you extended earlier this season?
"Next season, I will do it. If I am still here, I will do 10 years. He has to beat me."
Is Erling fit for Sunday? We saw him go down on his haunches a bit during the second half at Brentford.
"We'll see. Yesterday was a day off. Now I am going to training, we'll see. Because some players will finish with some problems like every game, and we'll see. I just want to fill in for him."
You always leave contract negotiations with players and transfers to Txiki Begiristain. What was your reaction when he told you that Erling was going to sign for 10 years?
"I said, can you repeat? And he said to me (10). I said, sure? And he said, yes. So, good news. That means... That means... That means a lot.
Is this deal and the incoming transfers another show that the board are still backing you in this position?
"They have shown it. They have shown it. When the players come, it's not because I decide. It's the club that brings the players here, being with his mates, with this manager, or in other ones. It's for a process for the club. The club has to decide. We have to change some players or the manager or whatever. These players are able to do it. That's why they decide. So the trust always has been there and I think the last two months, month and a half, in other environments, I would not be here. So that's for sure. So, always have been there."
Is this the kind of news that has an impact on the rest of the dressing room? Or players who are looking to come here?
"It helps, it helps for sure. Now it's the club, myself and everyone have to make the right environment to him to express every game, every three days, every week, the best of him. So, as a player, I have to deliver the actions. With Kevin in his prime, Erling would be better. We'll make a finished business in these actions, you know. And that is what we need. And I'm pretty sure, knowing in the club, it's going to happen. Sooner or later, it's going to happen."
Did you chat with Erling before he signed his contract? Did you give him any advice?
"Before? I don’t remember. I think he chatted with me when it already was done. And after that, we congratulate each other. Because he's making me a better manager, a better of the staff. That's for sure. He's helping me."
Who decided on the contract being ten years - was it initiated by the club or Erling?
"I think both. If the club didn't agree to offer this type of deal, he will not do it. If Erling is not completely pretty sure that I will live my ten years, my life, until 34 years old, when I finish, at 34 in this club, he will not sign. I think both parts are happy and they did it."
Why is the contract so long?
"I don't know. When Erling go to the press conference, [he can tell you]. I don't know the reason. I didn't ask. Because I think what happened in this situation, he feel it. He feels that it's the best for me, for my career, playing in this club. It's no more difficult than that. And of course, he's a special player. To find a player like Erling is so difficult. To find strikers in that level, once we have it, why don't make the effort to keep him? The club make, I'm pretty sure, the huge effort to have him and they decide."
Is he the Messi of his generation?
"Nobody is like Messi. He's a different type. He's a different type of player: Of course, the level of numbers, the score goals, is a level. But anyone who is like Leo. Leo has been like Cristiano, I would say. Both have been 14, 15 years scoring the amount of goals every season, arriving the last stages and everyone. Erling is a different type of player. Everybody knows it. But in terms of numbers, score goals, they are similar. But I don't know in that age, Erling, you know, has right now, you know, Leo or Cristiano, how many goals he scores.
"But it doesn't matter. All three, for example, when I say, maybe Mbappé as well, they have an unbelievable number. So all of them are top. But Leo can play in different positions and can produce many things for his mates. Leo is incomparable. And I think Cristiano has been there. so, so close."
Do you think Haaland could set records in the Premier League over the next decade that might never be beaten?
"If you continue with the numbers since he arrived, yeah. It will depend on the team, it will depend on him as well. But it's exceptional news for all of us, for the club, so... When one player decides to sign this type of contract never had done before, it's because he want to show how desperate he want to be here. Otherwise, all the agents and players always say, sign one or two or three-year contract, and next one, next one. Because in ten years, many things can happen. That means a proof of confidence and trust for that club."
He's done a lot already. Can he improve?
"Of course. The contract itself will not make him improving. It's himself or his desire. Of course he can improve. All of us, we can improve."
