Euro 2024: Who will England play next and when? Possible opponents for last-16 knockout stage

Euro 2024: Who will England play next and when? Possible opponents for last-16 knockout stage

Having made hard work of Slovenia, England will be hoping for an improved performance in the first knock-out round of Euro 2024 when it reaches the last 16 stage.

Gareth Southgate’s side have been handed a kind draw for their next match but will need to step up after their last stalemate and 1-1 draw against Denmark.

The Three Lions may need to change their left winger - or even change formation - after regular starter Phil Foden returned home to attend the birth of his child.

It’s just one change that Southgate will be considering as he looks to get the best out of a talented squad that has so far only delivered two goals in three games.

So who will England play next and how can you watch all the action?

Who will England play in the last 16?

England, having qualified top of their group, will play Slovakia in their first knock out match.

The game in Gelsenkirchen will be at 5pm on Sunday, June 30. See the full preview here.

Slovakia advanced from the ultra-tight group E, where all four teams finished on four points - having won one, drawn one and lost one.

Slovakia beat Belgium 1-0 but then lost to Ukraine 2-1 and finished the group with a 1-1 draw against Romania.

If England had finished second in Group C, they would have faced Germany in Dortmund at 8pm on Saturday, June 29. Instead that unenviable task now falls to Denmark.

If England had finished third, they would have played either the winner of Group F, Portugal, in Frankfurt at 8pm on Monday, July 1 or the Group E winners, Romania, at 5pm in Munich on Tuesday, July 2.

What if England beat Slovakia?

Despite a hard slog of a tournament for the Three Lions, they will be very much expected to book a spot in the quarter-finals.

This will be against either Italy or Switzerland who meet in Berlin at 6pm on Friday.

England and Italy played out the Euro 2020 final with the Italians winning the trophy.

The England / Slovakia v Italy / Switzerland game will be on July 6 in Dusseldorf.
