Conceding nine goals in a week has just been yet another depressing chapter in this season for Everton and their fans. The situation is horrible, and it only seems to be getting worse.

It’s clear that David Unsworth hasn’t been able to turn it around. The Everton board are still being slow to react and put a new man in charge. It’s clear that, not only did the board not have a man lined up to replace Ronald Koeman, they can’t even have had a shortlist.

A new manager is an immediate priority. People can argue what type of manager we should be going for, but one is desperately needed. The players look lost out there at the moment. We desperately need direction before relegation fears loom.

New players are required too, but our existing ones are far too good for our current position. I’d still argue that the current squad is the 7th best in the Premier League, but so many of our players are playing far below their ability.

The players are struggling, but the quality is there

Michael Keane is struggling to settle in, while Ashley Williams looks completely gone as a football. Jagielka is past his best. As is Leighton Baines. Our right-back situation hasn’t been sorted since Coleman’s injury . . . and that’s just the defence.

Morgan Schneiderlin is a shadow of his best, and Gueye looks a shadow of the player he was in the first season. We have far too many of the same type of players behind the striker and our wingers are either young and raw, or lacking quality.

Up front we haven’t replaced Lukaku. Rooney can’t play there on his own, Ramirez has been a complete flop so far and Calvert-Lewin doesn’t score enough goals. Niasse has been our best striker this season, which says a lot.

A lot of money was mis-spent, but there is more than enough quality in there to pull us out of this situation until January. In the transfer window we can focus on filling the gaps in the squad, for now we need a new manager to play with a style and give the player’s confidence to be at their best.

At the moment there is a new team every week and the players continue to look like strangers. Getting them to work hard as a complete unit is the manager’s job. David Unsworth has sadly been unable to do it, we desperately need to find someone who can.

Whoever it is, needs to be in the club by Wednesday, before our match against West Ham. We simply can’t afford to wait any longer.
