It was not a good weekend to be a Leicester City player on Merseyside. A day on from David Moyes' side putting four past the Foxes, Brian Sorensen's team repeated the feat at Walton Hall Park.

The Blues were 4-1 winners over Leicester in the Women's Super League, with a brace from Kelly Gago sandwiching goals from Katja Snoeijs and Honoka Hayashi.

The result eased fears over a potential relegation scrap for the Blues, as they pulled four points clear of Leicester with the victory. Attentions will now turn to a difficult double header, as they visit leaders Chelsea in the space of a week; first in the FA Cup, then in the top flight.

Snoeijs delighted with Leicester win

The Dutch midfielder was back among the goals against Leicester and shared her delight with the overall team performance after the game.

"I'm buzzing right now," she told Everton TV. "It was a good win, but also the way we played gave us confidence, so just really happy with the win."

She was also asked if the ACL injury that captain Megan Finnigan suffered a week ago served as some inspiration to the team in the build-up.

"Unfortunately we've been in this position quite a lot for quite a while now," said the 28-year-old. "It's always sad. Especially for the player but also us as a group if you lost such an important player on the pitch, but also her personality as well is really important.

"So it gives us that extra motivation to win. It was even mentioned before the game - look what she's done for us, the club. This is the time for us to pay her back."

Sorensen previews Chelsea clash

After a fine win over Tottenham Hotspur last week in the FA Cup, the Blues were handed arguably the toughest test in women's football in the next round - a trip to Chelsea.

Chelsea are seven points clear at the top of the WSL and booked their place in the League Cup final on Wednesday night with a win over Aston Villa. At the moment, few teams look capable of matching their strength in European football.

Everton will face them twice in a week at Kingsmeadow and while they will undoubtedlty be underdogs for the matches, Sorensen was adamant the Blues can spring a surprise.

"I think we have a chance," he said at his press conference on Thursday. "We know it is going to be extremely tough because they have world class players, but we will still play our game and try our best to get a result.

"We want to do well, it is a historical competition. When I was younger, I was always watching the FA Cup and its drama. We will do everything we can this weekend.

"I am really excited for what is to come because we are still new in relationships and understanding the players that we have got in. I am really happy. We still have a lot of things to get better at, but we are happy with our performances last week and the chances that we are creating."

Finnigan injury nightmare

There were big concerns about Finnigan when she hobbled out against Tottenham and the Blues confirmed she had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament knee injury a day later.

"A scan confirmed Finnigan's injury and the 26-year-old will now have rehabilitation under the care of our medical team," an Everton statement read. "Everyone at Everton is thinking of Meg and wishes her all the best with her recovery."

The injury represents the third of the same kind suffered by Everton this season. Inma Gabarro and Aurora Galli had their campaigns ruined with similar problems across the first two games of the term.

"Unfortunately my season has come to an end," the skipper said in a follow-up post on Instagram. "Devastated to have torn my ACL, every footballer's worst nightmare. But time to get the pom-poms out and be the best cheerleader for the girls. I'll be back."
