Everton handed new verdict over Beto penalty as referee explanation dismissed

The delight of Everton supporters after the 4-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday was tinged with some bemusement. How on earth did Beto not get a penalty in the first half?

Well, according to former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, referee Darren Bond made the right call not to award a spot kick when the Portuguese forward was taken out by Foxes defender Jannik Vestergaard.

The decision was one of a number assessed by Gallagher on Sky Sports' Ref Watch programme alongside former England internationals Sue Smith and Stephen Warnock.

Smith, who supports the Blues, was adamant that the decision should've gone in Everton's favour. But her co-host sided with the referee and VAR on the day.

"I didn't think it was a penalty," said Gallagher. "No I didn't. I've got this thing about people being side-by-side - when it's side-by-side you can be strong. He is very, very strong. There's no doubt about that."

Gallagher was then challenged on the point by Warnock, who suggested that the Leicester defender had in fact diverted course to take out the Everton man. The former Liverpool full-back added that it was "100 per cent" a penalty.

The former official was then asked if the decision was the referee's call given VAR did assess it.

"Yes I think so," Gallagher continued. "I think the referee would've fed back what I said, that it's side-by-side. VAR says 'no'.

"It's difficult because we debate many, many times is it a clear and obvious error? Well I've said many times that I think a penalty is a clear and obvious error. But it's not is it? We're not here to judge the referee we're here to judge the decision."

Everton had won a penalty in their previous outing at Brighton & Hove Albion, their first of the season.
