A season of major ups and downs has followed a familiar path for Everton in the last week. A 2-0 defeat in the Women's Super League on Sunday at West Ham United was followed up with a 2-0 victory in the FA Cup on Wednesday night over Tottenham Hotspur.

Kelly Gago and Heather Payne were on the scoresheet at Walton Hall Park to ensure the Blues progressed into the fifth round of the FA Cup. They will now look to carry some of that momentum into Sunday's showdown at home to Leicester City.

Blues bounce back in FA Cup

It was a night to remember for Gago and Payne as they each scored their first goals for the club in Wednesday's win.

Brian Sorensen made two changes from the weekend loss to West Ham and the team responded well. Everton were the dominant force in the early stages against Spurs and spurned a number of opportunities in what was a goalless first half.

However, they continued on the front foot in the second period and three minutes after the restart Gago converted well at the back post after good work from Karen Holmgaard. Payne then ensured there were no late nerves in stoppage time, as she capitalised on brilliant play from namesake Toni Payne.

A huge test awaits Everton in the next round of the competition, as they visit WSL leaders Chelsea on February 9.

As much as the Blues were delighted to progress, the match was marred by what looked to be a concerning injury to Megan Finnigan.

The defender went down in the opening 10 minutes and gamely tried to continue, only to eventually be replaced.

"I think the positive thing is that she was able to get back on the pitch," said Sorensen. "She couldn't continue, but we cross our fingers that it's nothing big, but we will have to see."

Update shared on new stadium

Earlier in the week, Sorensen also spoke openly about the prospect of Everton Women moving away from Walton Hall Park to a new facility.

The venue has been the regular home of the team since 2020, with some of their high-profile fixtures taking place at Goodison Park.

Everton men's team will leave Goodison at the end of the season and will begin life at the new stadium at Bramley-Moore dock for the 2025-26 term. Sorensen was asked about the possibility of a ground share and whether The Friedkin Group had revealed any plans over a potential relocation.

"Yeah I think so, but I don't think [the new owners] have ruled anything out, that's for sure," he said.

"They are very open-minded. It's just what is best for the women's programme? Is it building Walton Hall Park out so it looks like Kingsmeadow, is it finding another venue, is it going into the new stadium?

"We have better people than me to make those decisions in terms of what's best for the long-term programme on the women's side, so let's see what they come up with but I just know they are very supportive."
