Everton’s plan to cut short Armando Broja loan hits hitch with Chelsea
Everton’s attempt to cut short Armando Broja’s loan has hit complications with Chelsea wanting compensation to take the striker back.
David Moyes, the new Everton manager, confirmed his club were exploring the possibility of terminating Broja’s season-long loan after he was ruled out for 10 to 12 weeks with ankle ligament damage. Everton have used their full allocation of four loan signings this season and, with profitability and sustainability rules restricting their January budget, want to create space for another temporary transfer.
The 23-year-old signed for Everton last summer while sidelined with an achilles injury that had scuppered a proposed move to Ipswich. It is understood Chelsea agreed to cover the Albania international’s wages while he was out with the achilles problem.
Broja made his first appearance for Everton as a substitute in the 4-0 win over Wolves on 4 December. He started twice before, on his sixth outing, sustaining the ankle injury in the FA Cup third-round defeat of Peterborough. Because that is unrelated to the achilles issue, Chelsea want Everton to pay the remaining cost of the loan before terminating the deal.
Everton have been offered the opportunity to sign the former Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham midfielder Willian. The 36-year-old is a free agent after mutually terminating a season-long contract with Olympiakos last month and is keen on a return to the Premier League. Willian’s time in Greece was beset by injury problems and Everton have not decided whether to take up the offer, which has been made by agents representing the former Brazil international.
