Everton player ratings as Dominic Calvert-Lewin poor but team-mate suffers night to forget
David Moyes kicked off his reign as Everton’s new manager with a defeat to Aston Villa at Goodison Park. Ollie Watkins scored the only goal of the game five minutes into the second-half.
For the Blues, the result leaves them two places above the drop zone in the Premier League table. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, though, should have rescued his side a point in stoppage time.
And below is how Connor O’Neill rated Everton's players during the defeat to Unai Emery’s side.

Jordan Pickford - 6
Produced two great saves in the first-half to keep out efforts from Morgan Rogers and Jacob Ramsey, but hesitation cost him the chance of keeping out Ollie Watkins' goal.
Ashley Young - 5
Should have been punished in the first-half when he under-hit a back pass. Was solid enough defensively; however, his set-pieces need to improve, as on four separate occasions he found the first man.
James Tarkowski - 6
Produced a superb block to deny Youri Tielemans as he looked like he was about to open the scoring in the first-half. Could do nothing to prevent Watkins' opener.
Jarrad Branthwaite - 6
Gave the ball away, which allowed Villa to break and Watkins to finish. Also guilty of giving the ball away in the first-half. A below-par performance from the centre-back.
Vitalii Mykolenko - 6
Created a good chance for Doucoure in the first-half and also did well to head clear at the back post as Rogers looked to pounce. A much improved performance from what we have witnessed in recent weeks.
Jack Harrison - 4
Another night to forget for the on-loan Leeds United man. Struggled to get into the game in the first-half, and when he did, nothing came off for him. Replaced just before the hour mark.
Idrissa Gueye - 7
One of Everton's better performers. Covered plenty of ground and was on hand to cut out a number of Villa counterattacks. Just needs to improve his shooting.
Orel Mangala - 7
Another of Everton's better performers. Showed plenty of energy, and his pressing led to Villa making mistakes; however, his side failed to capitalise on them. Went closest to rescuing his side a point in stoppage time.
Iliman Ndiaye - 5
Another frustrating night for the playmaker. Too often he found himself isolated on the left and couldn't get into the game. He did show flashes when on the ball, but they were very few and far between.
Abdoulaye Doucoure - 6
In the first half, he should have done better with a chance and was full of energy. But in the second-half he struggled to get into the game and, along with Calvert-Lewin, found himself feeding off scraps.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin - 5
Should have equalised for his side in stoppage time. Also wasted two good opportunities in the first-half, one of which he should have done a lot better with. Desperately needs a goal for his confidence.
Substitutes
Jesper Lindstrom (for Harrison 59) - 6
Had very little impact on the game, despite being on for well over 30 minutes.
Jake O'Brien (for Young 83) - 5
Came on when David Moyes changed formation.
Beto (for Doucoure 93) - 5
Full of energy, but never looked like scoring.
