Some 30 years on from their last FA Cup triumph, there will be no fairy tale ending for Everton by marking their final season at Goodison Park with silverware as David Moyes’ side crashed out of the competition with a 2-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Before kick-off, Blues supporters showed they were up for the cup with a series of banners displayed in the Park End but their players were unable to respond as a brace of errors from captain James Tarkowski put them on the back foot, despite hitting the post three times in the second half and having an Iliman Ndiaye header cleared off the line.

Tarkowski brought down Antoine Semenyo for a 23rd minute penalty that the same player converted while his misplaced pass a couple of minutes from the break was followed by a defensive mix-up that resulted in Daniel Jebbison bundling the ball over the line for a second goal.

Jordan Pickford 6

Helped keep the score down from getting embarrassing in the second half with a couple of saves from substitute Justin Kluivert, he guessed correctly on the penalty and got a hand on Antoine Semenyo’s effort but couldn’t keep it out and was then let down by those in front of him for the messy second goal with the ball like a hot potato.

Jake O’Brien 5

Missed a headed chance from point blank range with a header against the post, after a promising start playing outside his natural position in the hat-trick of wins, this was a sobering reminder that the promising rookie still has much to learn as he had his hands full trying to deal with Semenyo.

Ashley Young 6

On a day when offers fell short of their potential, Everton’s oldest ever outfield player was not the problem as he slotted in seamlessly at left-back with Vitalii Mykolenko having suffered a calf injury, and produced a solid showing.

James Tarkowski 4

Everton’s captain never shirks his responsibilities but he suffered a first half nightmare, leaving his side with a mountain to climb as despite claiming to have won the ball from Semenyo, John Brooks pointed to the spot while it was his ill-placed pass that help gift the visitors a second for Daniel Jebbison to bundle in after some penalty box pinball.

Jarrad Branthwaite 6

Some well-timed challenges and a vital clearance on Ryan Christie’s looped effort but appeared to be in some discomfort at times which is a concern ahead of the Merseyside Derby, especially with the howlers from his centre-back partner.

Idrissa Gueye 6

A lively start from the veteran, zipping around he turf, and offering an option, but his slip late in the half almost proved costly and his influence waned as the contest wore on.

James Garner 7

No Hollywood pass to Beto on this occasion but on what was a tough day at the office, he was one of Everton’s brightest sparks with the home crowd loving his double tackle on Semenyo showing along with the silk he has also got steel.

Jesper Lindstrom 6

Continues to look a lot more purposeful under Moyes, but still needs to add end product and after getting little change out of Bournemouth’s defence for over an hour, he made way.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 5

Defended from the front to try and help his striker by closing down Bournemouth’s defenders but there were few subtleties and John Brooks shaking his head for a desperate attempt to win a penalty shortly before he was hooked summed up a frustrating afternoon.

Iliman Ndiaye 7

Denied what would have been a spectacular goal from a back header when Semenyo cleared his effort off the line and sparked a couple of promising second half attacks with drops of his shoulder followed by dribbles.

Beto 5

Back down to earth with a bump after his Leicester City brace, he scuffed at his clearest opening and wasn’t able to run on to the kind of service he enjoyed against the Foxes, playing largely a peripheral role.

Substitutes

Carlos Alcaraz (on 65 for Doucoure) 7

Action-packed cameo with some determined runs and hit the post from a free kick.

Jack Harrison (on 65 for Lindstrom) 6

Also struck the upright with a cross-shot that caught Kepa off guard and was a willing runner.

Tim Iroegbunam (on 74 for Garner) 6

Flashes at both ends, making a smart clearance to deny Dango Ouattara but should have done better when flashing a left foot shot wide after creating his own opening.

Michael Keane (on 84 for Gueye)

Cameo up front late on as Everton attempted to throw the kitchen sink at Bournemouth.
