Forced to finish the game with 10 men after Orel Mangala’s injury, Everton enjoyed a heroic 1-0 win at Brighton & Hove Albion in David Moyes’ first away game back as Blues boss. The visitors were awarded their first penalty of the season on 42 minutes after referee Tim Robinson was sent over to his pitchside monitor by VAR and deemed Joel Veltman had handled the ball.

Iliman Ndiaye duly converted from 12 yards out and through a determined rearguard action after the break, Everton kept the hosts at arm’s length to collect a precious three points at the Amex Stadium.

Jordan Pickford 8

There were flashbacks to Divock Origi when a Joao Pedro shot was deflected off Jesper Lindstrom and seemed to hover in the air before dipping under his head on the line, but he tipped it over the bar and was calm on the ball, despite a couple of early clearances being sliced, although he picked up a booking for time-wasting in the second half.

Jake O’Brien 7

A testing assignment on his first away day as Tariq Lamptey raced past him early on to drag a shot wide and he went head-to-head against Kaoru Mitoma before moving a bit more centrally after Nathan Patterson came on.

Vitalii Mykolenko 7

Looked assured, keeping an eye on Brajan Gruda in the first half before his opponent made way and defended resolutely against considerable pressure after the break, getting an elbow in the head from Pedro for his troubles.

James Tarkowski 9

Colossal display from the captain, making a series of clearances and blocks, including an inch-perfect razor sharp slide tackle on Mitoma.

Jarrad Branthwaite 8

Read the game with a cool head and was measured in his approach, despite being forced into some last-ditch defending along with his team-mates.

Idrissa Gueye 7

Worked hard in front of his defence to provide a shield, his passing was also sound as he laboured on despite going down hurt after the break.

Orel Mangala 6

Dogged rearguard action, he had a speculative chance from the edge of the area early on but couldn’t quite wrap his foot around the ball properly and with no substitution slots left, Everton were reduced to 10 men when he went off injured in the last 10 minutes.

Jesper Lindstrom 6

No repeat of the all-action display against Tottenham Hotspur, there were a few fleeting moments before he made way and he was a lucky boy when he hauled down Lamptey just outside the Everton area, a challenge for which he was shown a yellow card.

Abdoulaye Doucoure 6

Offered physicality and hard running but little in the shape of finesse in what was a battling display.

Iliman Ndiaye 7

Nailed his penalty coolly to put Everton ahead, firing low into the corner, despite Bert Verbruggen going the right way, picking up a booking for winding the home fans up with his celebration, other than that he made a few purposeful raids up the left wing without there being much space for him to run into.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin n/a

Was unable to build on ending his scoring drought against Tottenham Hotspur as he hurt himself going up for an early header against Joel Veltman and was forced out of the contest.

Substitutes

Beto (on 13 for Calvert-Lewin) 7

Fired an inviting, rare opportunity to double Everton’s lead wide having been given an early introduction after Calvert-Lewin’s injury, he also put the pressure on Joel Veltman for the Brighton & Hove Albion man to handle the ball that led to the penalty.

Nathan Patterson (on 61 for Lindstrom) 7

Brought on just after the hour mark to try and stem the tide down Everton’s right flank, he got stuck in.

Ashley Young (on 77 for Ndiaye)

Late introduction to provide more solidity down the left.

James Garner (on 77 for Doucoure)

A welcome return off the bench for his first outing since Newcastle United on October 5.
