Everton vs Liverpool LIVE: Premier League updates, latest team news, TV, prediction

Everton host Liverpool on Wednesday night in the final Merseyside derby to be held at Goodison Park. The two rivals were initially set to clash back in December but saw that game postponed at late notice due to Storm Darragh hitting the UK. Now, the Toffees have been rejuvenated under the stewardship of returning manager David Moyes and are looking to record what would be a statement win over their neighbours on what promises to be an emotional evening.

It will be fascinating to see how the Premier League leaders respond after being stunned by Championship strugglers Plymouth in the FA Cup on Sunday. The Reds have reacted well to the few setbacks they’ve encountered in Arne Slot’s first season in charge but a game at Goodison under the lights is a potential banana skin despite the serene nature of their campaign thus far.

Always a game to look out for when the fixture dates are released, Everton’s imminent stadium move only adds to the narrative, as does the chance for Liverpool to move nine points clear of Arsenal in the title race as they finally contest their game in hand. David Moyes confirms potential Everton starter vs Liverpool

15:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

David Moyes has confirmed Vitalii Mykolenko could return for the Toffees, although Nathan Patterson, Seamus Coleman and Dwight McNeil are all injured.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti are also ruled out but there could be a start for January signing Charly Alcaraz.

"He's done enough by his performance to start the game,” he said. “Whether I do is another thing. I think sometimes when you bring someone in, you don't know how long it'll take for someone to settle.

"I have to say, he settled very well in the game. He's got Premier League experience, so he's not completely new to this.

"The decision will be made tomorrow on whether we start him or not."

Arne Slot prepared for 'fantastic' atmosphere at Goodison

12:33 , George Flood

Arne Slot has urged his Liverpool players to be “mentally strong” to combat the effects of what is set to be a “fantastic atmosphere” in the last-ever Merseyside clash to be held at Goodison Park.

“I think it's an extra reason why the atmosphere will probably be even better than all the occasions before,” Slot said.

“I haven't been to one but people tell me at Goodison Park, as at Anfield, it's always a fantastic atmosphere. Home supporters are there to support their team and the away fans are mostly loud as well.

“It's probably going to be a fantastic atmosphere and that's never easy to play against because every single time they cross the halfway line, or they get a corner kick, or whatever happens, the fans will cheer for that.

“Then you have to be mentally really strong as an away team to resist all that, the complete atmosphere, and you still have to be focused on what you have to do; defending the corner kick, defending the set-piece.

“When you have the ball, be as calm as you can in this fantastic atmosphere. But it's not the first time for these players that they are playing in atmospheres like this.

“I hope they can focus on what they have to do, but it's not only tactical, you also have to stand up to those emotions because I've noticed also in the Plymouth game that the intensity of the tackles and how aggressive they were, that was a quality of their players but it was definitely also because of the emotions in the stadium, so we have to be up for that.

“I've seen the game of last season, for example, I think we were quite ready because after 10 minutes the referee blew his whistle 11 times and 10 times in favour of Everton!

“The Liverpool players were ready to compete, but every time they touched them it was a freekick. I assume our players are ready for another battle tomorrow for the simple reason that they have been ready for the whole season and many of them are experienced for this tie.”

Slot issues Alexander-Arnold and Gomez injury update

11:15 , George Flood

Here is what Liverpool boss Arne Slot had to say on Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez at his pre-match press conference earlier this morning...

“Trent has done parts of training sessions with us. Not ‘sessions’, a session, yesterday,” he said.

“So, let’s see how he is today. He will train, hopefully, with us again and then we have to decide if we take him to the game, yes or no.

“Joe, it’s the same leg where he had the injury last time. We are still assessing that but he will definitely not be available tomorrow.”

Asked if it is a concern that Gomez’s issue is in the same leg as his previous hamstring injury, Slot said: “That’s mostly a concern.”

Everton vs Liverpool prediction

10:31

Both of these sides will be keen to bounce back quickly after respective strong runs of form were spoiled in the FA Cup at the weekend - with one defeat obviously way more unexpected than the other.

Liverpool had been cruising across all competitions before a weakened side were stunned by second-tier basement club Plymouth on Sunday, having easily booked their place in the Champions League last 16 and swatted aside Tottenham to reach the Carabao Cup final.

They should secure a return to form here, particularly if Trent Alexander-Arnold is fit to return, and will want revenge having seen their strong record in the Merseyside derby ruined by a shock 2-0 loss at Goodison last April.

The chance to move nine points clear of Arsenal in the title race by winning their game in hand is simply too good to pass up, though Liverpool could face problems against an Everton team who had been reborn under David Moyes before their own cup exit at the hands of Bournemouth.

The inevitable emotion of the occasion could play in the Toffees’ favour, with this of course being the last derby to be held at Goodison.

We expect a tight affair for the most part, but Liverpool doing enough to secure the win.

Early Liverpool team news: Alexander-Arnold could return

10:20 , George Flood

We have already heard from Arne Slot early this morning, with the Dutchman revealing that Trent Alexander-Arnold resumed partial team training with Liverpool on Monday following a knee injury suffered against Bournemouth at the start of the month that forced him to miss the subsequent games against Tottenham and Plymouth.

He is hoping he takes part again at Kirkby today, with a final decision on the England right-back’s fitness to be taken ahead of the game tomorrow.

However, fellow Liverpool defender Joe Gomez will definitely play no part in the Merseyside derby after being forced off just 10 minutes into his return from a hamstring injury against Plymouth on Sunday.

The 27-year-old is still being assessed but won’t be involved against Everton, with Slot admitting concern that the latest injury is to the same leg.

Early Everton team news: Mykolenko back in training

10:14 , George Flood

We’ll be hearing a full update from David Moyes a little later on today, but Everton still have quite an extensive absentee list ahead of Liverpool’s short trip across Stanley Park.

They have lost Lyon loanee Orel Mangala for the rest of the season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, with striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin also sidelined with a hamstring issue.

Everton are also currently without the likes of Dwight McNeil, Armando Broja, Seamus Coleman and Youssef Chermiti, though full-back Vitalii Mykolenko is now back in training after missing the FA Cup defeat by Bournemouth as a precaution.

Hello and welcome to Standard Sport’s live coverage of Everton vs Liverpool in the Premier League.

We are gearing up to the final-ever Merseyside derby clash to be held at Goodison Park before the Toffees officially move into their new home at Bramley-Moore Dock in the summer.

This fixture was originally supposed to have taken place on December 7, only to be postponed on the day of the game due to the effects of Storm Darragh hitting the UK.

Now Liverpool will hope to bounce back from their huge FA Cup upset by Championship strugglers Plymouth that quickly took the shine off that emphatic Carabao Cup semi-final revenge mission against Tottenham by winning their game in hand and moving nine points clear of nearest challengers Arsenal in the title race.

But Arne Slot’s men could face a stern test against an Everton side who, prior to their own FA Cup fourth round exit at home to high-flying Bournemouth, had been resurgent under returning boss David Moyes, with a succession of eye-catching victories moving them nine points clear of the relegation zone.

With the game coming up at 7:30pm GMT on Wednesday night, stay tuned for all your match build-up including team news and much more!
