Every FA Cup third round game of the decade as Reading prepare to host Burnley
Reading return to the FA Cup third round on Saturday after failing to make that stage last season following defeat to Eastleigh.
Beating Fleetwood Town and Harborough Town so far this season, the Royals host Championship high fliers Burnley as they look to cause an upset and make the fourth round after a three year hiatus.
In preparation for Saturday's clash, take a look below at the last decade of FA Cup third round ties, which include some memorable, and plenty of forgettable, afternoons.
2014/15: Huddersfield Town 0-1 Reading
A scrappy contest with just one shot on target played in front of under 8,000 supporters, Nick Blackman was the hero for Reading as his goal in the final 20 minutes settled the tie.
Little did supporters know that this victory would kick-start an historic run to the semi-final for the first time since 1927.
2015/16: Huddersfield Town 2-2 Reading
Reading 5-2 Huddersfield Town
For the second season running, the Royals began their FA Cup journey at the John Smith’s Stadium. A much more enthralling tie than the year before, all four goals came in the final half hour. Jamie Paterson put the hosts ahead, but Matej Vydra and Hal Robson-Kanu looked to have turned the game on its head for Brian McDermott’s side. Nakhi Wells, a regular thorn in the side of Reading down the years, equalised in the second minute of stoppage time to earn a replay.
Just a few days later, David Wagner brought his Terriers side down to Berkshire for a classic cup tie. Patterson and Tommy Smith netted in the opening half hour to put the visitors firmly ahead, but a red card for Jonathan Hogg changed the game. Lucas Piazon scored from the resulting free-kick before Vydra grabbed himself a second-half hattrick to complete the turnaround. Alex Fernandez scored his only Reading goal in stoppage time to add some gloss to the result.
McDermott would lead the club into a third quarter-final in March following wins over Walsall and West Brom, eventually losing to Alan Pardew and Crystal Palace.
2016/17: Manchester United 4-0 Reading
There was to be no long run in the FA Cup this season as Jaap Stam took his promotion-chasing Royals back to a club he called home in the 1990s.
Any hope of an upset was quashed in the opening 15 minutes as Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial found the net. Marcus Rashford grabbed himself a brace in the final 15 minutes to seal a comfortable win for Jose Mourinho’s FA Cup holders.
There would, however, be a trip to Wembley for Reading that season as Huddersfield Town came out on top in the Championship play-off final come May.
2017/18: Stevenage 0-0 Reading
Reading 3-0 Stevenage
Reading, now struggling in the Championship, travelled to the Lamex Stadium low in form and confidence. League Two Stevenage shaded the tie in Hertfordshire, with travelling fans angrily confronting captain Paul McShane after the game as the Boro earned a replay.
There was to be no dramas back at the Madejski Stadium though as Jon-Dadi Bodvarsson scored a hattrick to cruise into round four and a date with Sheffield Wednesday, which the Owls won at Hillsborough.
2018/19: Manchester United 2-0 Reading
Reading fans returned to Old Trafford in their thousands for the second lunchtime meeting in three years between the sides, but still left empty-handed. A much-improved display, Danny Loader had a big chance to put Jose Gomes’ side ahead but Juan Mata and Romelu Lukaku hit the net for the Red Devils in the first half.
2019/20: Reading 2-2 Blackpool
Blackpool 0-2 Reading
An entertaining tie between Championship Reading and League One Blackpool ended all square at the SCL Stadium in 2020. Mark Bowen had made 11 changes and Nathan Delfonseu put the Tangerines ahead before Sam Baldock levelled after the break. Armand Gnanduillet put Simon Grayson’s side back ahead on the hour-mark before Loader equalised yet again for the hosts. Blackpool had a chance to win it with 20 minutes to go but Gnanduillet saw his chipped penalty hit the crossbar.
The replay was much more straightforward for Reading, with Blackpool seemingly more interested in the return of club legend Charlie Adam, who came off the bench for the Royals. Jordan Obita and Lucas Boye did the damage at Bloomfield Road and Reading would go on to reach round five after beating Cardiff City on penalties in round four.
2020/21: Luton Town 1-0 Reading
A deeply forgettable tie, almost the entirety of the campaign was behind-closed-doors due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Reading, chasing promotion under Veljko Paunovic, made 11 changes and were edged out in a low-quality game at Kenilworth Road, George Moncur scoring the only goal on the half-hour mark.
Strangely, the Hatters knocked the Royals out of both cup competitions that season as Jordan Clark’s early goal was enough for a 1-0 win in the League Cup in September.
2021/22: Kidderminster Harriers 2-1 Reading
Perhaps the most embarrassing day in the club’s recent history, sixth tier Kidderminster scored twice late in the second half to overcome Paunovic’s heavily rotated Royals side at Aggborough Park.
George Puscas had undeservedly put the visitors ahead as the Harriers’ energy and desire proved too much for a lacklustre young side.
2022/23: Reading 2-0 Watford
Youngster Kelvin Abrefa scored his first Reading goal while veteran Shane Long scored his final Reading goal in a solid victory over fellow Championship side Watford.
Setting up a third trip to Old Trafford in six years, this time the Royals would score but Paul Ince’s men lost 3-1 at the Theatre of Dreams.
