The 'January' transfer window has closed without Newcastle United adding to Eddie Howe's squad. The Magpies had been clear from the start that they would be very unlikely to make any significant signings in the winter trading period, and so it has proved.

Financial restrictions mean United were unable to invest in the playing squad over the last five weeks, with fans hoping that this strict approach will pay off with a summer transfer chest. There's nothing guaranteed, of course, but the feeling is that Newcastle will be able to spend once the season is over. How much, remains to be seen.

A lot rests on the ability to raise revenue, and ideally without selling a big-name player such as Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon or Bruno Guimaraes. To that end, the January window was a success, and United have been able to raise funds through player sales.

A total of seven players left St James' Park since the window opened on January 1, four on loan deals, and three permanent transfers. The headline moves were Miguel Almiron's £10m switch back to MLS side Atlanta United, while defender Lloyd Kelly joined Juventus in a deal worth £20m to Newcastle.

Both will go down as pure profit in terms of PSR, with Kelly signed on a free transfer last summer and Almiron's having spent long enough at the club that the fee United paid for his services does not come into the accounting. Jamie Miley's switch to Hartlepool was the other pemanent deal, with United allowing the youngster to pursue a career with Pools.

On the loan front, Alex Murphy is looking to get valuable gametime in League One with Bolton Wanderers, while there were similar deals for youngsters Travis Hernes and Charlie McArthur. Experienced midfielder Isaac Hayden moved to Portsmouth on loan, with his future at Newcastle in doubt. There were some incomings in terms of youth players, with a deal agreed for Galway youngster Kyle Fitzgerald.
