Arne Slot bluntly explains why he expects to become next Liverpool boss

Arne Slot has confirmed that he expects Liverpool to reach an agreement with Feyenoord within a few days.

The Reds opened talks with the Dutch club on Wednesday as they ramped up efforts to appoint a successor to Jurgen Klopp, who is already confirmed to be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Slot has already admitted that he would like to replace the German at Anfield, with it now down to the two clubs to agree a compensation package.

Feyenoord beat Go Ahead Eagles 3-1 on Thursday night, with Slot’s future inevitable the main talking point after the game.

Speaking to NOS Sports after the final whistle, the 45-year-old offered an update on Liverpool’s pursuit of him as he reiterated his hope for Feyenoord to agree a deal with the Reds..

“The clubs are negotiating and I’m waiting for that, he said. “That’s the current situation. I can’t say anything more about it.

“I’m confident it will work out because I think it’s already been done very well. You can always look at it differently but it’s already been done.

“In the past, there were also members of my staff who gave me that step. Now I’m not asking for a favour. You can see what kind of amounts are being deposited so it will be a consideration for the club.

“Yes, we would like a lot of money. That’s completely fair, but I think they will be grateful for the last three years and there will have to be a balance in that in terms of transfer fees.

“I just sketched the scenario as I think it should go but I don’t determine it. I’m waiting now what the club management are going to do. And in this case, Liverpool.

“It is not the first time that a big club has interest in me. Last year I made the choice to stay at Feyenoord.

“I think it was good for all parties. We had a very good year, a cup win, we secured our Champions League place again. Players who have become worth many times more, than another big club has interest and it’s up to you to see how that will go.”

He continued: “I don’t have a clue what’s going on at the moment so I’m working on it as little as possible. And if it’s that far in the future, then ask me again.

“No, no, no (I’ve not spoken to Virgil van Dijk). First the clubs have to make an agreement. I think those are the orders.

“And if it gets that far, then the season is still going on so you don’t want to ruin that process. I assume so (that it will be agreed in days), yes.”

Slot made headlines in his post-match press conference on Thursday night when he confirmed that he wants to join Liverpool.

However, that wasn’t all he said about the Reds as he hinted at how much the Dutch club are hoping to receive for his services.

“Obviously it's nice when a big club approaches you,” he said. “That wasn't the first time the years I've been here at Feyenoord, of course.

“At the same time you know that there are still some very important matches coming up including the cup final, so we focused fully on that first. We won that and then it got a bit more attention in the media and that is just how it goes.

“I have the impression that a good offer has already been made. And it seems that Feyenoord is already going to make the highest-paid Dutch transfer fee for a coach. And somewhere I still have the idea that I have performed so well in recent years, earned [the club] so much that Feyenoord is thinking along those lines.

“Although thinking along might not be the right word when you hear the amounts involved. I don't think 'wish' is the right word when you know the amounts involved. Wishing is when you have a clause in your contract and that's the maximum they're willing to pay.

“Then you can talk about wishing, now it's just hard bargaining, which is everyone's right. But I absolutely believe they will reach an agreement.”
