Every word Johan Lange said on Tottenham January transfers, late deals, Tel X-factor and loans
Tottenham technical director Johan Lange has delivered his verdict on the club's January transfer window. A key month for the football club, Spurs managed to add three new players to Ange Postecoglou's squad after completing deals for Antonin Kinsky, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel.
Kinsky was the first to arrive in N17 at the beginning of January, with Danso and Tel signing on the dotted line in the final two days of the transfer window. Danso joins from Lens on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy, with Tottenham's loan agreement for Tel containing an option to buy in the summer if they so wish.
One of the biggest gripes for Tottenham fans during the transfer window was that the club moved too late in the winter market following a host of injuries to Postecoglou's squad. Sitting down with SPURSPLAY to reflect on the club's January business, Lange opened up on the club's late moves, scouting Kinsky, Tel's X-factor, loan players heading out of the door and so much more.

You can read every word Lange had to say in his interview below:
What did you make of our January transfer window?
"I think the January transfer window is always a difficult transfer window. Normally around ten per cent of all transactions is done in the January transfer window compared to the summer transfer window.
"We came into the window with an ambition of trying to strengthen us in certain areas and I think we sit here after the window and we have signed a new goalkeeper, a centre-back and an offensive player as well. That is where we are, and overall we're very satisfied with that."
Can you talk us through the new signings, starting with the goalkeeper?
"Toni is a goalkeeper we had followed for quite a long time. He was a target that we were considering for the summer, but due to Vicario's injury we decided to see if we could move it forward to January. He's a goalkeeper who is already, despite his young age, quite proven. He has been in goal in the Czech divisions for the last few years.
"For me, he's a very modern goalkeeper and he's a goalkeeper who suits our style of play. We had followed him a lot, I think we've watched him 10 or 12 times live since the summer, and we had a very detailed knowledge of him also as a character. We're very excited that he is now at the club and of course will come in and compete."
As you'd looked at him for the summer, how difficult is it then to bring something forward like that to January?
"Yeah, it's not always easy, of course. I think he was very impressed to learn about all the intel we had on him, how we had followed him for a long time. We know a lot about him as a character as well.
"Of course, he had a conversation with Ange as well, most specifically about the style of play and I think it definitely helped that he was comfortable making the move mid-season."
Kevin Danso stylistically looks a really good fit, I assume that plays a big part when you're signing him?
"Yeah, the stylistic fit is always important. The way we play we need players who are able to come in and perform within that style. Kevin, of course, as you say, is a very good stylistic fit but also he comes in with a lot of experience, both in the Bundesliga and in the Ligue 1 in France, as well as from the Austrian national team.
"He comes in at a good age with the experience to come in and take a role from the first day and getting to know him more and more I'm sure that his personality will play a huge factor in the dressing room going forward."
What can we expect from Mathys Tel?
"Mathys is a fantastic talent. He's in a very unique group of players who, at a young age, has already played a lot of football at a very, very high level. I think he has played around 60 games in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, In the Champions League, he has played 15 or 16 times for Bayern already at the age of 19.
"He is a versatile attacking player who has the X-factor that hopefully will bring excitement to the stadium as well. He's a player that all of us can't wait to almost set free in our club and hopefully we will share many fantastic experiences together in the future."
January is always a difficult month to do business in but fans are no doubt wondering about the timing of the business as well...
"And that is a fair question. As a club, we would have liked to have done all the signings on the 1st of January. We were ready to do that, but it is not as easy as that. I think this January here, in particular, the dynamic changed a little bit.
"We're not the only team who has injuries and also the dynamic of the new European format, both meaning that all the clubs competing in the European competitions this season here have had to play group matches in January, which is never the case. Normally, the clubs will know their fate in the European competition in December. But the fact is now that there are another two group games in the last part of January as well as more teams who are going through the group phase into the play-off stages. Those things mean that clubs were more reluctant.
"It's also about finding the right players here to come into the team. It's not about buying the first players available, but also being the right player, both for now, but also for the future. In the first two weeks of January, I think there were 12 transfers within the whole of the Premier League and I think that says a lot.
"You can, of course, influence things, but you cannot completely dictate the whole transfer window dynamics. Some players are also sometimes uncomfortable making a change mid-season because they want to see the season out. They want to arrive at a new club having a full pre-season. We are asking players and players' families to make a move because in 24 hours you're leaving your country, you're starting to play the next day.
"So, there are a lot of factors that most transactions are done in the summer. But again, as I said, we were ready to go from the 1st of January. I think, sitting here, we spent all the days of the window trying to get the business done. We have brought three players in, and we're all certain that they will contribute to the club in a very positive way."
Strategically, how difficult has it been to plan for the future while at the same time knowing you have players coming back from injury soon as well?
"Yeah. That, of course, from our club, this January here has played a factor, that we're doing... through the January window, we also suffered new injuries, which added to the equation as well. The injured players will, of course, come back.
"So, on the one hand, you want to, of course, see what you can do right here, right now, but also knowing that you have very, very good football players returning from injuries very soon. So, it's also about getting the whole squad composition right at the same time."
Can you talk to us about the process about signing players in terms of making decisions on who it is? Is it a dialogue between you and Ange for example?
"We are building here a very strong and robust evidence-based infrastructure. So, for instance, when we arrive with Toni in the beginning of the market and when we present to him, and the same with Mathys as well, I think they're very impressed by the detailed knowledge we have of them and what they have done in their career so far, how we anticipate them to perform within our style and system, how much we know about their character etc.
"Then, of course, Ange, myself and the scouting department, we have meetings, and in every transfer we have made since I arrived at the club, of course, Ange has a conversation with the player as well. So, we are building here, and that is a key competent to being successful in the future as well, that you need to have a very strong infrastructure in the club as well, because the league we're in, the market we're in, are very, very competitive."
How nice has it been for you to see the summer signings come in and fit the culture, fit the style but also have an impact on the pitch as well?
"I think, when we are going through the scouting process, there are many elements, and one of them is character. Of course, to see players, irrespective of age, coming in, taking a lot of responsibility and playing with courage, that is, of course, very pleasing to see, say for Archie and Lucas. There's no doubt that this period here will benefit so much their overall development as players.
"For Dominic, I think he has been outstanding for us all season. I think the way he has played, both in and out of possession, and what he has done tirelessly for the team has been a pleasure to watch."
How exciting is it for the young players to go out on loan and how important is that for the club?
"I think also in the previous interviews that we have done, the loan market for me is a very important step for the players' development. Again, over 80 per cent of all the players making their Premier League debut, starting debut, they have been out on loan. If you take some of the most important players in this club's history, they have also had a loan as part of their development. So, to have a strong loan process is very important.
"Now, with Will [Lankshear], Luca [Gunter] and Yang [Min-hyeok], we felt that it was the right step in their career to go out and have more regular game time in good environments. That is an important part. They will then return in the summer and be ready to compete in pre-season."
How close an eye do you keep on the loan players and what can you tell us about the lads that are out on loan?
"The loans, you can say, sit under Andy Scoulding, who is doing an amazing job with the loan players, being on top of them, following their development, because when they're out on loan, they are in a different environment. They need to feel part of the club even though they're not here on a day-to-day basis.
"We follow them regularly, watching the games, trying to get them in once or twice a year, to come back into the environment here, to hear how they are. For us, it's important that, of course, they are at another club, but they still feel part of this football club here. As I said before, in the years to come, this year will be a natural step in most of the players' development."
Can you just give us your take on where we sit going into the final stage of the season?
"I think that is absolutely right, we are still in the four competitions. We're one game away from having an amazing opportunity to go to Wembley. And in the Europa League, as well as the FA Cup, we're highly ambitious. With the new format, we were one of the teams that went through as a top-eight in the league phase of the Europa League and we want to really push in that competition as well.
"Then, we all know that we would like to be higher in the [Premier League] table, but all this adversity that this group has gone through, seeing the courage that the players are playing with, the resilience they are showing in difficult moments, and the togetherness within the group, I think that the players should be immensely proud of that.
"We still have the opportunity to make this into a very, very special season. I'm very, very excited about that and I think that we should be dreaming about making this into a special end to the season."
