Every word Liam Manning said on QPR draw, Bristol City frustration, Tanner return and more
Bristol City let a one-goal lead slip to extend their winless run to three matches in the Championship against QPR at Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon.
Scott Twine had given the Robins the lead with his first touch off of the bench as the attacking midfielder curled in an excellent right-footed free-kick after Liam Manning's side had dominated for the entirety of the first half.
While City had chances of their own to double their advantage, it was Marti Cifuentes' side who struck next, with Paul Smyth securing a vital point for the visitors as he beat Max O'Leary to a loose ball on the halfway line before finding the net from 40 yards.

Here is a full transcript of every word Liam Manning said to the written press in his post-match press conference at Ashton Gate on Saturday...
You must be hugely frustrated.
I think it sums it up right? I was quite honest with the lads afterwards. Unfortunately, we’re saying the same thing too often, and it’s definitely not through a lack of attitude, effort, or being all in on what we’re trying to do. It then comes down to being good enough and executing final actions, which is… frustrating.
It wasn't really missed chances, but you didn’t perhaps create enough chances for the possession you had.
Yeah, we did. If you actually look at the stats, we did. We missed three chances, if you go off xG which doesn’t tell you everything, it's at two so that’s a good indicator of high-volume, high-quality chances. I’ve seen numerous ones back as well, so when I look at it, that’s the bit for me. In the first half, we got into some great areas, put in some really decent crosses and we actually created a decent number if you watch it back.
So much was good today, it must be difficult for you afterwards not to be angry or frustrated afterwards because that's how you want to play. So much to admire but not the end result .
Yeah, and that’s the bit I can’t do, unfortunately. If you look at the performances, that’s probably the frustration I think, because it’s quite clear that we have an identity. We press really well, we’re aggressive in duels and then had good control with the ball. It’s not the first time I’m sat here saying this or a similar thing.
Is there something you can do about it?
If we weren’t having the volume of shots, we had 17 shots, only five or six on target, but we missed three big chances. For me, there’s only so much work I can do with them. It’s then about executing and the final actions and we’ll keep working away. But at the same time, if we want to shift away from being a mid-table championship side you need people to step up and execute, and deliver.
If you look over the course of a season, it’s not good enough to do it only 85% of the time. If you want to get where we want to get to as a club, you need people to step up and deliver 95% of the time. People are going to have bad games here and there, but what we can’t do is be sat here so many times after so many of the draws like Swansea away, and losing at Watford, so many times saying the same thing.
Everyone has to understand they’re playing for their futures, and I know the lads are ambitious and driven, but it’s ultimately about turning up and delivering and not talking about it all the time.
You could have had four more points just this week.
Yeah, just this week and that’s the frustrating bit. I’m sure every head coach or manager would be sitting saying the same thing: should have would have could have. Those words are a waste of time to me.
I thought the Sunderland game you were very unfortunate not to win as they didn't seem like scoring all the way through so the defending side of it seems to be right at the minute.
Yeah, and I think we put those foundations in last season. I think back to QPR here last season here and we lost 1-0. We didn’t create nearly the amount of chances or dominate as much as we did today, so there’s progress there, but if we want to do something we need to deliver now and the progress has to happen quickly. I can’t knock the lads' attitude, effort, desire, and how they go about themselves, like at Sunderland, they gave everything.
I’ll be the first to criticise ourselves about Portsmouth away if we’re not all in, but the last two games the lads have given everything, it just then comes down to quality.
On the two goals, did you bring on Scott Twine especially for the free-kick?
Yeah, we always were going to do it, but we obviously rushed it forward just because that’s the quality he’s got in those areas. It’s a moment of outstanding quality, and unfortunately, an error then that cost us.
Did you feel Max O'Leary was at fault?
He should have stayed. He's put his hands up to be fair, which for me, it's not an easy thing to do in today's society. But to the same point, there's numerous times since I've been here where he's saved us as well so he's put his hands up and said he probably should have stayed, especially when you see the lads' attitudes in the middle of the pitch which was top so he didn't need to come.
Did you feel there was enough cover to stop the ball from getting there?
Yeah, the lads recovered really well. I think there were four or five in the middle who were excellent.
Do you feel like this squad has the ability to take those chances and kick on? We've said after a few games now that they've not taken those opportunities.
Yeah, I don’t have a crystal ball and know, but I see the work that they do. It’s just transferring that into games in high-pressure moments. With the lads, it’s not through a lack of work or desire or effort to make it happen, it comes down to how you handle pressure in those key moments. It’s what you’re like technically, is your focus is there, are you are in the right positions. There were a couple of crosses where I thought people could have been in better areas, but I think on the whole we asked enough questions, and got into enough areas to score goals, we just didn’t.
How do you reflect on the last month or so since the international break?
I haven’t thought about the bigger picture at the minute to be fair, I’m just thinking about the game, and it’s been quite heavy at times with travel etc so all my energy has just gone into today's game and making sure we're ready for the next one. We've got a slightly longer week this week so I'll spend a bit of time looking back and going right, what does it need to look like because we need people to step up ultimately.
What does the next week look like with no game in midweek?
It's a good opportunity to train, so we'll be in training working hard and getting ready for it.
With players coming back now, there's a chance to progress and kick on further over the Christmas period.
Yeah, we've got depth, good to have Ross [McCrorie] back, good to have Twiney back, and George Tanner is close. We're going to need the bodies and ultimately people are going to have to step up because now what we've got is options to change it.
