Every word Liam Manning said on Blackburn Rovers, Bristol City's depth, Mayulu interest and more
Having not been anywhere near their recent standard during their defeat to Coventry City, Bristol City picked up an important point against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Wednesday evening.
Goals from Nahki Wells and Ross McCrorie twice helped the Robins come from behind against Danny Rohl's Owls to draw 2-2 and ensure the gap to the play-off places wasn't stretched further.
However, the chaotic nature of the Championship schedule means that the Reds are back in action again just a matter of days later when they welcome Blackburn Rovers to Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon. John Eustace's side currently sit sixth in the Championship, four points clear of Liam Manning's Robins.
Rovers come into this weekend's game without a win in either of their last two matches however having been beaten first by Oxford United and then by Coventry City last time out. They will be looking to ensure they don't drop out of the play-off places when they travel to the South West.

With the quick turnaround between games, there was no pre-match press conference this week with Manning instead conducting an extended interview after the draw at Hillsborough. Here's a full transcript of everything the head coach said to the written press...
Liam, I imagine there are some mixed emotions after that one.
Yeah, definitely mixed emotions. I thought first half they probably shaded it without it being one where they had complete control. I thought we had periods first half where we controlled the game by passing the ball, but probably lacked purpose with it. Didn't get in the final third or the penalty area enough or ask enough questions.
We're obviously disappointed, and frustrated to come in a goal behind given it was quite tight. Then second half, I thought we came out and showed a real belief, a real purpose, a real intent in everything that we did. I enjoyed a lot of our second half and obviously marginally frustrated not coming away with more.
Sam Bell could have won it at the end, I imagine that would have been a heart-in-your-mouth sort of moment.
That's the bit. I thought the lads coming on had a terrific impact to be fair. We need the squad, we need the depth. Obviously, it's a quick turnaround now for Saturday so I think the main bit is the lads being ready when called upon. The boys coming on tonight had an excellent impact and Belly obviously nearly nicked it at the end.
I thought Mark Sykes sent a real reminder of just how good he can be. Two excellent crosses and plenty to like about his performance.
Yeah, I thought he did well. His feel on the crossing is excellent. The ball to Nahki for the goal was such an outstanding moment of quality. I thought he did well and obviously, Ross the other side had a real good impact as well. When you look at it, there are numerous lads going through that hit a certain level, especially second half.
Nahki is obviously experienced but for his confidence, it must help him getting on the scoresheet as it has been a while, even though he's been playing well.
Yeah, he's very good in game at moving on. I know game to game he's desperate to do well, desperate to score and desperate to help the team win. He doesn't surprise you Nahki, right place right time obviously for the header. We over analyse what goes wrong in the goals we concede and what we score and it felt like we had to work really hard to produce moments of outstanding quality to score versus conceding slightly frustrating goals.
I don't know if you've seen it back but there were some calls for a foul on Scott Twine in the build-up to the second goal. What was your view on that?
It was a free-kick for me. I think he had a tough night the ref. Not intentionally and he was quite honest afterwards. The frustration comes from me, I thought what wasn't a foul in the first 15 minutes all of a sudden 20 minutes on was a foul. That's probably players and fans and staff, I think you set the tone early on as a referee in the first 10, 15 in how you intend to ref the game and that was probably the bit where the foul on Twiney in the first 15 minutes gets given. That's the bit for me, I thought he had a poor evening, to be honest.
Looking ahead to Blackburn, obviously a quick turnaround. Is Marcus McGuane in contention? I understand he did travel today.
He's back in contention, Marcus. He's someone that's going to be important for us as well. That's the bit, we've got some depth, we've got some options. You look at Joe Williams as well, someone that's back around it now that we're able to build up and he's going to be important as well. We've got that and you saw the importance of it tonight, being able to bring people on to change the game in such a positive way.
Transfer-wise, are you expecting anything before Saturday?
No.
No?
Not at the minute to be honest. I know there are bits out there about Fally at the minute. There is interest in him, it's a discussion in-house about what's best for the club and him. It also shows the competition that we've got in the group as well that we're travelling here with Marcus [McGuane], there's no [Cam] Pringy, no Fally, no [Harry] Corns. When you look at it, we've got some good options behind us.
On Fally, before you've said you rather him stay with the club than head out on loan. Do you have a preference for what you'd like to see happen with him this month?
I mean look, it all depends on the options. It's probably not all on what I'd want and what's in front of us, what's best for the club, what's best for Fally, what's best for the team here. They're obviously the conversations that will happen behind the scenes. He's got interest and we'll have to see what happens.
If he were to leave, I'd imagine you'd be keen to get another nine in. You've mentioned wanting the three different profiles and you have Nahki and Sinclair Armstrong so would you want another striker in if Mayulu were to leave?
You forget Belly comes on nine tonight and Belly's done really well when he's played nine recently. I think if it's the right thing to help us push, we'll have a look if it's viable and if it's possible. At the same time, we have got depth, we have got options as well. It's one of those, you never know in the window what could happen.
Just finally, with such a quick turnaround what do the next two days look like with such a short gap between tonight's game and Blackburn?
It becomes challenging, but if you're chasing the coaching going into Saturday and one day, then for me we haven't done the right work in the last 14 months. The biggest bit we take away from tonight is that we can do the coaching, and we can have game plans, but it has to be underpinned by a real intent, belief, energy and positivity which we saw second half.
It's a late night tonight [Wednesday]. We'll get back probably at 3am, the lads are off tomorrow [Thursday] which I think is important. They'll need the sleep to recover and get their bodies over tonight and the travel. In on Friday ready to work and obviously they have the extra day on us which is marginally frustrating, but we'll be ready to go on Saturday.
Liam can I ask from a Wednesday perspective, some of the subs Danny Rohl made tonight, Shea Charles came off at half-time. Were any of those a surprise to you?
To be honest, I didn't really pay too much attention to it. Naturally, when the game is going on, most of my focus is on us and what we need to do. You'd have to speak to Danny as to why he made those changes.
Those last 20 minutes, you guys were really piling it on. Did you feel that it impacted the game because those were three of the sort of standout players?
I'm always going to be biased on my lads. I thought in terms of what we did, our intent, our purpose it might look like that. I thought the changes we made raised the intensity. I thought we pressed really well, we were a bit more aggressive in duels and ultimately, I thought we passed the ball with real quality on what is a terrible pitch to be fair. Showed some real bravery to go and do that.
What did you make of the pitch? They've had to train here the last few weeks.
Terrible. Not at the level.
