Ex-City youngster Bill Marshall impressing on trial with Scarborough
RELEASED York City youngster Billy Marshall impressed Jonathan Greening in his debut on trial at Scarborough Athletic.
As previously reported in the Press, both Marshall and fellow youngster Leon Gibson-Booth have left York with manager Adam Hinshelwood not able to guarantee their future with the club, allowing the duo to find regular minutes elsewhere.
Gibson-Booth has since joined Morpeth Town on a permanent deal, with the help of Director of Football Tony McMahon, whilst Marshall was spotted on trial with Scarborough in their County Cup 10-1 win over TIBS.
Greening spoke to BBC York on the likelihood of a potential contact for Marshall, saying: "Billy is a Scarborough lad and he got released by York at Christmas time.
“It’s always hard when a player gets released because as a young kid your head is all over the place.
“We invited him in to come and train and play and to have a look at him over the next few weeks, I don’t know much about him other than that he has been at York, I haven’t seen him play before.
“With our injury all season really, but definitely in the last few weeks, we thought that we’d have the chance to have a look at him in the game the other night.
“We got him signed up, he’s come into training and we’re going to have a look at him over the next two or three weeks.
“I thought that he did really well the other night, he’s got really good energy, he’s composed on the ball, he can get box-to-box, he can tackle, he can compete and he’s very good on the ball.
“He’s only a young kid, so we’re having a look at him.
“We’ve had a good chat and he knows the score, he’s going to have a look at us and we’ll have a look at him.
“Fingers crossed, if he does well then we might sign him up.”
Unfortunately for Scarborough, former City man Michael Duckworth was a first-half casualty in the win over TIBS, being forced into a substitution just six minutes in.
The right-back switched York for the Seadogs in the Summer having struggled with injuries for City in his final season at the club, with Greening providing an update on the condition of the defender.
Greening added: “It’s absolutely devastating because he’s been brilliant since he’s come back into the team after his two bouts of fever, so we’re really disappointed to lose him.
“I’m sure he’s more devastated than we are, because like I mention all the time, no player wants to be injured.
“He’s had a chance to go and get a scan, it’s a slight tear but not a big tear so we’re looking at two or three weeks, fingers crossed.”
