Ex-Dragons centre with love for 'nitty-gritty' earns deal with Premiership club
FORMER Dragons centre Max Clark has signed for Newcastle on a three-month deal.
The 29-year-old missed a reunion with the Rodney Parade club, who won at Kingston Park in the Challenge Cup on Sunday, but will bolster the Falcons midfield options.
Welsh-qualified Clark, who made 15 appearances for the Dragons in 2022/23 after joining from Bath, has been staying sharp by training with Saracens this season and has also appeared for Paul Turner’s Ampthill.
Now he will attempt to help Newcastle avoid finishing bottom of the Premiership and potentially push for the last 16 of the Challenge Cup, although they are up against it after pointless encounters with Pau and the Dragons.
“The chance to come up to Newcastle and hopefully play some rugby is absolutely fantastic, and I love the kind of backs-against-the-wall mentality that the Falcons have,” said Clark, who played for England Under-20s.
“We’ve got a chance to do something quite special and prove a lot of people wrong, and that whole underdog mindset can be really powerful.”
“I’d love to say I’ve got the speed of Adam Radwan and the flair of Finn Russell, but the reality is I lean more towards the nitty-gritty side of things,” he continued.
“Work rate, defence and running the hard yards are more what my game is based on, but I think there’s always a place for that in rugby and I’ll be suited to what Newcastle are trying to do.”
Clark joined the Dragons from Bath but had just one campaign at Rodney Parade, spending last season on loan at Cardiff.
Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Steve Diamond said: “He has played more than 100 top-flight games, he’s at a good age and he’s got all the attributes to come in and make a positive difference.”
Clark is in contention for Saturday’s clash with his former club Bath.
