Former Everton manager Roberto Martinez praised Liverpool's squad depth after the Reds' Boxing Day win over Leicester.

Arne Slot's men extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points with a 3-1 victory over the relegation-threatened Foxes, courtesy of goals from Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones and Mohamed Salah.

Martinez was impressed by the quality of the substitutes available to Reds boss Slot, as the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott all emerged from the bench during the second half.

"When you look at the players who come on they're the same level as the players who started," Martinez said on Amazon Prime's coverage of the match. "They're a very strong squad and it's a healthy competition with a very strong spirit."

Two of Liverpool's scorers — Gakpo and Jones — have been rotated at times this season, starting nine and eight league games respectively, which underlines how much faith Slot has in his squad as a whole.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Slot spoke of his satisfaction with the options he has at his disposal all over the pitch — but particularly in attack, after Gakpo netted his 10th goal of the campaign in all competitions.

"I think the main difference maybe is that the set-up of the front three was a bit different [in the past] than the set-up now," Slot said about Gakpo's improved output. "We expect a bit from our wingers to keep it wide, to try to get them in one-v-one situations. Cody has done this really well.

"Lucho [Diaz] has done this really well when he played from the left but Lucho is, in our opinion, also capable of playing as a nine; he did that really well against Spurs. Against Spurs it was mainly maybe Lucho and Mo that were dominant, now it was Cody again, together with Mo. It’s just nice to have so many options, in every position actually but also in the front three."
