Shane McCabe has played down any over-excitement surrounding Glentoran's return to silverware. The Glens lifted the County Antrim Shield on Tuesday night, their first trophy in five years.

It was the latest sign of a potential revival from the East Belfast side under manager Declan Devine. They currently sit second in the Irish Premiership and are into the final of the BetMcLean Cup and last-16 of the Irish Cup.

McCabe - who was part of the last Glentoran side to lift the Gibson Cup in 2009 - has welcomed the club's recent resurgence.

But he insists Devine's tenure "won't be measured" by how any County Antrim Shields the Glens win.

McCabe told the BBC: "The Shield was long overdue. Let's call a spade a spade, Glentoran were in a poor space for a long time.

"Decky won't be measured on County Antrim Shields, with all due respect. He will be measured on Irish Cups, League Cups and league titles.

"They have a long way to go but they're going in the right direction."

McCabe believes Glentoran are in "a good place" right now. And he says the more momentum the team build in the coming weeks, they will be backed by a passionate support.

Speaking before today's game against Loughgall which the Glens won 2-1, he added: "Look at today. Fuad Sule isn't involved. He must be rested. And that's a great position to be in because he's a player who has been picking up man of the matches left, right and centre.

"So when you can rest players like that for trips to Loughgall then you're in a good place.

"And Decky is being backed by the owner. He has made a fantastic impact.

"I was lucky to play at Glentoran for a while. Once they get good momentum going, the fans will back them.

"And it looks like the owner is backing Decky as well."
