Former Kilmarnock and Celtic midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu has told of his pain at the “suffering” as war rages in his Democratic of Congo homeland.

The 37-yea-old spent four years in Scotland with stints in Ayrshire and Glasgow and spoke of his sorrow at the horrific events in central Africa. Mulumbu was born in the Congolese capital Kinshasa but it’s on the eastern side of the country, the mineral-rich city of Goma, where battle has raged with Rwandan-backed M23 fighters fighting Congolese government forces.

Many have been left dead with bodies on the streets and hospitals struggling to deal with the growing number of casualties. Mulumbu took to social media to say: "My heart breaks seeing the suffering in Goma and across our beloved DRC.

“I salute the brave FRDC soldiers defending our land with courage and sacrifice. To my Congolese brothers and sisters: we cannot wait for the international community. Our strength lies in our unity. Together.”

Mulumbu was capped 45 times for his country. At club level he came through the ranks at French giants Paris Saint-Germain before moving to England with spells at West Brom and Norwich City.

He moved to Rugby Park under Steve Clarke and earned a move to Celtic on the back of an outstanding season but returned to Ayrshire on loan before signing for Kilmarnock on another permanent deal.
