Former Scotland star John Fleck was "conscious" and smiling after he fell ill during a pre match warm-up.

The 33-year-old was surrounded by emergency service staff and stretchered off the pitch minutes before Chesterfield’s League Two game with Doncaster Rovers on Thursday night. The one-time Rangers prodigy was then taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. Chesterfield claimed a 5-2 victory, dedicating the win to the former Sheffield United man.

And Spireites assistant manager Danny Webb provided an update at full time. He said: "We saw him, he was on a stretcher as he was leaving. Conscious, speaking, with a smile on his face and he’s in good hands.

He added: “There was a period with John on the floor in the warm-up and football goes out of your mind. Our dressing room was a very quiet place before kick-off. Us as staff tried to lift the boys and let them know that John seemed to be okay when he left. They were flat because he is a team-mate and they care about him. They went out there and got the three points for John.”

Blades boss Chris Wilder, who coached Fleck during his Premier League days, sent his best wishes, adding: “Texts were coming over last night, I spoke to our doctor who was in touch with the Chesterfield doctor, and his agent and his family. He’s okay, thankfully. And he’s back home and recovering. It was a shock when it happened but it was pretty low key and we’re all delighted that John’s on his way to making a full recovery.”

Fleck came through the youth system at Ibrox and won five caps for his country. His last appearance came in March 2021.
