Excellent display, special day for Manchester United loanee and strongest squad yet - Cheltenham Town boss Michael Flynn after Newport County AFC win

Where does that sit among performances from Cheltenham Town this season?

I thought we were excellent, especially second half. It was a very, very good away performance. We started quite slowly, if I am honest and Newport looked the better team for the first 10 or 15 minutes. But we grew and grew into the game and the boys were excellent today.

What did you say to them at half-time?

By then we were on top, winning 1-0, nearly had a second before half-time. We had to make sure there were no silly mistakes, no red cards, not giving a penalty away, those kinds of things. Just do our jobs professionally and that's what we did.

What pleased you most about the second half?

Getting the goals and not conceding. The way we went about it. We won battles, 1 v 1s, 2 v 2s, against a team that didn't stop. I know the crowd here better than anybody and they still got behind them. They are a fantastic group of supporters. I don't enjoy it, playing against Newport. That's why my celebrations were very muted.

You have an outstanding record against Newport though, don't you?

Yes, but I don't even look at that. A certain reporter sent me my record against Newport, but I don't like seeing Newport lose. I have to be professional and do the job I am paid to do. I am really enjoying doing a job for Cheltenham Town Football Club.

A big day for Ethan Williams and how is he after having to come off?

He is fine, but it was a mixture of cramp and a dead leg. He is fine, completely all right now.

He took his goal well, didn't he?

A superb finish. I was glad it fell to him more than anybody because he is both footed, so whichever foot it fell to, I knew he'd have a good strike on target.

He still had a lot to do, didn't he?

Of course he did. Yes, it was a great finish. Ethon Archer topped it off with a goal we are becoming familiar with. It was really good.

There has been a bit of a dip away from home, but this puts paid to that, doesn't it?

We haven't been good enough, results wise, away from home. I don't hide anything or dress anything up. Performances have been there, but not results. If they had, we'd be in the top three. Let's get it right. But they haven't been, so that was an important win for us today.

Looking at the bench today, is this one of the strongest squads you've had since you have been here?

Yes, 100 per cent. And that's without Jordan Thomas, who was ill today.

Were you trying to work out who to bring on, with so many different options?

You have to look at how the game is going, do we need a goal, do we need to shut up shop? As it happened, I was able to be a bit more flexible today. I looked at people who needed game time and got them on the pitch, Liam Dulson, who has come back from injury and he is stepping up. He has a bright future as long as he continues to learn. Tim Dieng and Liam Kinsella have been out with little niggles, so getting them back onto the pitch and into the groove again. It gives us more strength on the bench.

You have a big run of Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday matches now, do you see yourself using all of the players?

I'd probably think we'll have to. We have a really difficult game Tuesday night against Walsall, who have been superb. Mat Sadler, Trivela, have done an unbelievable job there. The group of players they've got have all bonded, the recruitment has been good there and it looks like they are up. We have to be at our very best. They've been consistent, so it'll be a tough game. Another one of my old clubs, who I am very fond of.

Are you enjoying yourself?

I am and I will get this out of the way now and I can't wait to go and see their manager, then I can relax.

The cross for the first goal from Ethan Williams, how good was that for Matty Taylor's finish?

First goal was my favourite today. Unbelievable cross and finish. Typical Matty Taylor, I am not sure he could even see it coming in because he was behind, his movement and a fantastic finish. That was my favourite goal today.

An assist for Ethan Williams last week, now a goal and an assist, so how pleased are you with how he's adapted to League Two football?

He has quality, which is why he's at Manchester United. If he carries on the way he is, he'd probably make an impact in their first team at the minute. I am delighted they trust us with him and I'll do my best to make him as best as we can for the parent club. He's a great lad, who wants to learn and I am pleased to have him.

Ethon Archer hasn't scored for 14 games, so that will do him a lot of good won't it?

It will, but let's be honest, I am glad he's done it after the window shut because if he'd carried on scoring at that rate, he would have probably had more bids and have gone.

You knew you'd get a good welcome back today, but Scot Bennett having his song from the Newport fans when he went on. That doesn't happen every often for players does it?

It's what Scot and Joe Day deserve when they come back here because they've been outstanding servants for Newport County AFC and I'd like to thank the Newport County AFC fans for the welcome. It's always difficult for me because I don't enjoy it, but that applause meant a lot to me and my family as well.

At least you don't have to play them for a while now...

Exactly, but we'll probably play them first game next season, or something like that.

And you can pretty much walk home now

That's exactly what I am doing!
