Excellent Illan Meslier saves do not mask Leeds United issue that irked Daniel Farke
Leeds United beat Coventry City 2-0, but they should have won by a much wider margin. First-half goals from Joel Piroe and Jayden Bogle ultimately saw Leeds over the line - though many chances were wasted.
Going into this game, Coventry had gone eight unbeaten in the league. After full-time, Frank Lampard said he could do nothing other than hold his hands up and say the Whites were the better team.
He suffered his first defeat to Daniel Farke in his fifth meeting against the German manager. Farke himself, meanwhile, was able to put the match in fine context.

Wasted chances
Farke was not shy in highlighting his disappointment that his side were not more clinical in the game. While he was delighted with the result against a team in form, he warned that such missed chances can come back to haunt Leeds in future matches.
Piroe missed a one-on-one, as did Largie Ramazani. Brenden Aaronson decided to take a touch when he was put through by Manor Solomon before he was clattered. Farke could not believe it was a penalty but, ultimately, the scenario should never have happened.
Aaronson runs a lot and puts in so much energy but again lacked end product. He did net against Cardiff, but that’s his only goal contribution in seven league outings.
Meslier magnificent
Illan Meslier has been the subject of much justifiable criticism in recent times, having dropped a clanger against Hull City following his howler against Sunderland earlier in the season. In the aftermath, Farke doubled down on the goalkeeper being his number one.
He produced two fine stops against Coventry, the first of which was the best. The Frenchman clawed the ball away from the corner of the goal when it seemed destined to creep inside the post. Some home fans were celebrating having believed it had gone in.
The second at the end from close range saw that Leeds could navigate the last embers of the game sweat-free. That’s now 19 clean sheets in the league and five a row, having not conceded a goal in more than a month.
Gruev call
Farke elected to field Ilia Gruev in place of Joe Rothwell to add more protection in front of the back four with Ethan Ampadu in defence alongside Joe Rodon. The Whites boss did the same against Burnley and the game finished goalless.
Gruev was more defensive that game but was effective in attack against Coventry, playing some defence-splitting balls while being mindful to do his defensive duty. There were a few loose passes and it was not his most clean outing but his selection was justified.
In his post-match press conference, Farke said he rotated Joe Rothwell out due to him playing 90 minutes against Cardiff City on Saturday and also because he wanted legs in midfield amid the hectic schedule. Farke will be glad he has wealth of midfield options at his disposal.
Full-backs productive
Jayden Bogle now has four goals this season - as well as two assists - thanks to his driving run. The goalkeeper might have made an error but he deserved his goal.
This comes after Junior Firpo notched three assists against Cardiff City at the weekend. All the while, the defence has kept six straight clean sheets and not conceded for more than a month.
Bogle has been a beacon of consistency throughout the winter period, with Farke stating he had been his player of the match in the fixtures from last month. He also previously said that he is delighted to have Firpo back, and raved too about Sam Byram - who didn't get onto the pitch - being a quality option post-Coventry.
