Exeter City disappointment but point is something to build on

Exeter City ‘didn’t perform to the level they wanted’ as the Grecians battled bravely to snatch a point at the death away to Peterborough United. City looked to be on the verge of a fourth straight League One defeat until Millenic Alli’s stoppage-time goal.

Hector Kyprianou's opener looked to have given Posh their first league victory in seven. But in the 90 th minute, Demetri Mitchell was tripped in the box. Alli’s penalty was saved, but the Irishman tucked away the rebound.

But City defender Ed Francis admitted that the Grecians needed to be much better and were short of the level they wanted. And he said that with Peterborough struggling, the game was there for the taking and they should have capitalized on it.

“We are disappointed and we didn’t perform to the level we would have liked,” Francis said. “They are a team which is struggling and in a bad place and we didn’t take advantage of that.

“It is good to get the point in the end and something we can build on but if a team is there for the taking we need to capitalize and have to turn up more than we did in the first half.

“At half time the message was we needed to turn up, tackle harder, run faster. We played better in the second half, it wasn’t perfect, but the intent was there and luckily we got the reward in the end and hopefully something we can build on.

“We showed character and that is what we need. We have played better in the other games but points are what we need and it is something to build on.”
