Liverpool are gearing up for a tough match on Thursday night, as they look to book their spot at Wembley and defend the Carabao Cup. Arne Slot's side are set to face Tottenham Hotspur with a narrow one-goal deficit in need of being overturned.

Slot has some work to do as his team trail following Lucas Bergvall's controversial late goal in their first-leg encounter at the start of January, but with the lead so narrow the winner is still in the balance. Slot, speaking from the club's AXA Training Centre, expressed his desire to play at Wembley, an "iconic" venue he's yet to experience in any capacity since joining the Reds' ranks.

Speaking on its nickname as "Anfield South" the Dutchman said: "Ah! Anfield South! It's because the club has been there so often? It cannot be underestimated Maybe some of these players are already used to Wembley, but it would be my first time to go to Wembley."

Adding to the drama, Liverpool's opposition, Ange Postecoglou’s squad, has been strengthened by new arrivals including Mathys Tel and Kevin Danso who are poised to make their mark. In spite of the additions, Postecoglou faces selection woes of his own with a slew of injuries potentially side-lining Dominic Solanke, James Maddison, Guglielmo Viscario, Brenndan Johnson, Destiny Odogie, Timo Werner, Wilson Odobert, and Radu Dragusin.

With all of that in mind, the Liverpool Echo has taken a closer look at what the rules are surrounding the semi-final.

Is there extra time in the Carabao Cup semi-finals?

After clubs and players complained of fatigue from a busy match schedule, the EFL decided to scrap extra time for the first round onwards. However, for both the semi-final and final extra time comes back into play. So if Liverpool were to finish with a one-goal lead after the first 90-minutes they could be set for a nail-biting extra half an hour of play.

Away goals are not used in the Carabao Cup these days so there is no advantage if Spurs score at Anfield.

If the match is still level at extra time, a penalty shootout will be played to decide the winner.
