Outgoing Al-Ettifaq boss Steven Gerrard is set to be leave behind a mammoth pay packet as he prepares to walk away from the Saudi Pro League side.

In Gerrard’s first season in charge he guided the club to sixth place finish – 48 points behind league winners Al Hilal – having splashed big money to bring in the likes of Jordan Henderson, Moussa Dembele and Jack Hendry. Last weekend's draw with Al-Wehda has left the club facing a relegation scrap with Ettifaq hovering just five points above the drop zone.

Back in November, the former Aston Villa and Rangers boss took a final roll of the dice as he got rid of No. 2 Dean Holden with former Ibrox sporting director Mark Allen to bring ex-Light Blues boss Michael Beale to his backroom team. After he arrived as his assistant, Gerrard declared that he needed time to get things right with the "super coach".

He said: "The club made decisions regarding the departure of Mark Allen and Dean Holden. The decision was also made to bring Michael Beale in who is a super coach, we spent years together previously and it's great to have him back with me.

"I did not want to lose Michael when I was at Aston Villa and when he left it was a blow to me. If he had been available when I negotiated to come to Al-Ettifaq, he would have been my assistant at the club. Now we need some time to develop and improve."

However, Gerrard appears to have now decided it's time up and will give up a mammoth pay packet. He is said to earn a £15m-per-year pay packet - that has put him among the highest paid managers on the planet.

And what next for the Liverpool legend? Punditry, or another go at management? The bookmakers have him down for a return to the Scottish Premiership.

The Rangers title-winning boss has been given odds of 6/4 to return to Ibrox by Gambling.com. A move back to Glasgow has been given a 40 per cent probability rating.
