The FA have revealed why Wolves forward Matheus Cunha was handed a reduced ban for his involvement in a post-match scuffle following Ipswich Town's win at Molineux.

The Brazilian cancelled out a first-half own goal to equalise for his side, but Jack Taylor's stoppage-time header saw the Blues take all three points in the West Midlands last month.

After the game, however, a brawl broke out that saw defender Rayan Ait-Nouri handed a second yellow card. Referee Simon Hooper didn't spot Cunha, however, who delivered an elbow to the back of an Ipswich security guard's head before pulling the glasses off his face.

The 25-year-old was quickly charged for the incident, but his ban didn't arrive until after Christmas. This is because the incident was considered 'non-standard' and came without a pre-determined sanction. Evidence had to be submitted and assessed by the commission, which led to a longer timescale.

Even then, Town supporters were stunned to see that it was only a two-match suspension, with one of the games coming in the FA Cup.

The FA Disciplinary Commission originally planned to give Cunha a three-match ban, but ended up reducing the punishment after he quickly penned a handwritten apology to the security guard and offered to pay for his glasses.

Explaining the incident in his statement to the commission, he said: “As I tried to get closer to Rayan to make sure he was okay, I was suddenly surrounded by a lot of people. I felt like I was being shoved by the ITFC security personnel, so I shoved them back in an effort to break away from them to protect myself.

"It was never my intention to come into contact with Mr. [redacted] and I certainly never meant to elbow him. I simply wanted to push him away from Rayan.

"Then all of a sudden, I remember Mr. [redacted] turned round and had his hands on my shirt, and I shouted “stop” but he kept hold of my shirt.

"Mr. [redacted] is much bigger than me and I was surrounded by a large number of people, mainly ITFC personnel, so I remember feeling quite threatened at the time.

"So in an effort to get Mr. [redacted] to let go of my shirt, in the heat of the moment I regrettably reached out and grabbed his glasses. I know it was wrong to do this and I take full responsibility for my actions.”

In response, the commission "agreed that MC’s acceptance of the Charge, his prompt personal apology to [redacted] (which it found to be sincere), the offer to pay for new glasses and his clean disciplinary record, were mitigating factors.

"It did not accept WWFC’s argument that it should take account of the fact that the ITFC security personnel were overly aggressive and contributed to the atmosphere of hostility.

"Even if that were the case, which the Commission did not accept, it did not amount to mitigation for MC’s actions. Taking all of these factors into account, the Commission decided to reduce the suspension by one match.

"It ordered that MC be suspended immediately from all domestic club football until WWFC has completed two first-team competitive matches in approved competition."
