Fabio Carvalho confident Liverpool will return to form as Jurgen Klopp’s side turn focus to pressing
Fabio Carvalho wants Liverpool to return to their pressing best when club football gets back underway.
The Reds endured a frustrating first few months of the season, leaving them sixth in the Premier League and already 15 points off table-toppers Arsenal.
Inconsistency was an issue for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who beat Manchester City at Anfield only to lose to Nottingham Forest a week later. Liverpool have won just one match away from home in the Premier League this season.
They are currently in Dubai as they step up their preparations ahead of competitive action resuming, with Carvalho scoring inside a minute in a friendly match against Lyon.
The Ligue 1 side went on to win the game 3-1, but the 20-year-old was encouraged that Liverpool’s focus in training on their pressing had a swift impact for his goal.
”That’s what we’ve been working on all week and obviously it paid off today,” Carvalho said after the match.
“We could have done it more often and we just need to tidy up with little tweaks and together we can do it
In the absence of club football, the Liverpool players not involved at the World Cup have been reflecting on performances this season and comparing them to those in previous years when they were challenging on all fronts.
Carvalho is confident that the process will help the Reds get back to their best.
“For me it has certainly helped because we have been looking at videos from last season, and obviously it has helped,” Carvalho said.
“We want to get back to pressing how the team pressed last year, which was very useful in games and we created a lot of chances from it. We haven’t quite been at the level pressing-wise this year and it’s something we’ve been working on and will keep working on.
“Hopefully we’ll be back to our best.”
