Falkirk have confirmed that assistant manager Paul Smith suffered a heart attack after being rushed to hospital following the 2-1 defeat to Raith in the Scottish Cup.

In a dramatic fourth round tie at the Falkirk Stadium, John McGlynn's had looked set to claim a place in the last 16 of the cup after Callumn Morrison's goal had put them in front 11 minutes from time, only for Sam Stanton to equalise with four minutes remaining before Dylan Easton bagged what turned out to be the winner in the second half of extra time. In an address to supporters, Falkirk have provided an update on Smith's condition and are hopeful that he will be released from hospital by the end of the week.

A club statement read: "The club can confirm that Assistant Manager, Paul Smith, was taken to hospital after becoming unwell following yesterday’s game. We can confirm he suffered a heart attack.

"He is recovering well and hopes to be home by the end of the week. The club wishes Paul all the very best with his recovery."

The Bairns currently sit two points clear at the top of the Championship with a game in hand as they look to seal a return to the top-flight for the first time since 2010. They will get the chance to immediately avenge their defeat to Raith when they go to Stark's Park in the league on Saturday.
