A FANS' VIEW: Rotherham United 3-1 Bolton Wanderers
Under a clear blue sky, we made our early morning frosty way to New York - the Aesseal New York Stadium that is in Rotherham.
The Millers had guaranteed the match would be on, using a giant heated balloon to keep the frost off the pitch during the coldest weather of this winter.
We were given a warm welcome and directed to the Union Club, the Rotherham Transport Employees Sport and Social Club, which turned out to be a shrine to Northern Soul.
While scoffing cheeseburger and chips, washed down with John Smiths bitter, we mulled over our prospects for the lunchtime kick off match.
Our rank inconsistency dominated our thoughts. Our inability to string results together is a big problem.
We had not won three consecutive league matches in 2024, but Rotherham were on a poor run themselves, with only one goal and two draws in their last five matches.
Surely, we would never have a better chance to improve on our awful record at Rotherham, stretching back to the 1960s.
New signing Joel Randall was put straight into the team, a sign that the board are backing the Wanderers.
We started reasonably well for the first 15 minutes, but then Rotherham started to press us and wait for the inevitable mistakes.
Once we conceded the penalty for their goal, there was only one way this match was going.
We were second best all over the pitch, lacking the fight and spirit to make a game of it.
The match was well over before Rotherham got their third goal in the 75th minute.
John McAtee did get a consolation goal, by which time the Bolton crowd had lost the will to cheer.
Things were turning increasingly toxic in the crowd, with Ian Evatt being the target for a lot of abuse from the fans.
Where do we go from here? Unless we can get our act together, we are going nowhere.
We have got decent players, but we haven’t got a decent team.
You can have all the talent in the world, but you have to battle in matches before you can use those talents.
Where is the Wanderers ‘ fighting spirit? Something is not right behind the scenes.
The fans are getting increasingly angry and frustrated with all the apologies for not playing well.
The buck stops with the manager - as it so often does. Do something about it!
