Fenerbahce 1-1 Manchester United: Jose Mourinho sent off as spoils shared in feisty Europa League draw
Manchester United had to settle for another Europa League draw as Youssef En-Nesyri’s header cancelled out Christian Eriksen’s opener against Fenerbahce in Istanbul.
Eriksen had struck United ahead in the first half when he applied a nice finish to a well-worked team move.
But En-Nesyri latched onto a lovely ball from Allan Saint-Maximin just minutes into the second half to equalise for Fenerbahce.
Jose Mourinho was sent off in a fierce atmosphere in Istanbul as he and Ten Hag had to settle for a point each.
Ten Hag bizarrely chose to start Noussair Mazraoui in the No10 position, but it looked a masterstroke as he was involved in the opener.
Manuel Ugarte did well to recover possession in the build-up, with Eriksen striking home for his fourth goal of the season.
Marcus Rashford then danced his way into the Fenerbahce box and cut inside, only to see his shot go agonisingly wide.
As the first half came to an end, Andre Onana produced a double save of epic proportions to deny En-Nesyri.
United went into the break the happier of the two teams, but the Red Devils were behind just minutes into the second half.
Former Newcastle star Saint-Maximin whipped a sumptuous ball into the box for En-Nesyri to head in and send the home crowd wild.
Mourinho was sent off for protesting during a Fenerbahce penalty appeal, but referee Clement Turpin didn’t bow to the hosts’ demands.
United had some late half-chances through Alejandro Garnacho but didn’t do enough to warrant victory in the end.
