The Woking side nearly went into administration in 2024, which would have meant they would have been disqualified from the 24/25 National League season.

The dawn of a new era at Woking Football Club has begun, after the financially troubled Surrey club has confirmed that new American owners have completed their takeover; and now officially hold a majority stake of Woking FC.

American conglomerate Cardinal Football Group LLC were on a 'clear path' to securing the deal in December 2024 after the the National League side's shareholders voted in favour of the sale at a general meeting.

Now, all the details of the acquisition have been ironed-out; with Woking FC announcing on Monday, February 3: "Woking Football Club is pleased to confirm that Cardinal Football Group LLC, led by Todd Johnson, has completed its acquisition of a majority stake of Woking FC."

As part of deal, Woking revealed they have appointed three new members to their Board of Directors. This includes Dean Curtis, the current chief executive of a data risk solution company, who has previously worked for Barclays Premier League clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur. Kathryn Swallow, who has previously been responsible for brand partnerships with FIFA, UEFA and Manchester City FC. And finally, Steven Batchelor, a 'football mad' Woking local who is part of the senior leadership team of a leading private equity firm.

Woking FC has said these new additions to the team's board will join existing board members Todd Johnson, Drew Volpe, Emanuele Palladino, George Burnett, and the Cardinal Trust representatives. With three former board members departing as part of this transition.

A Woking FC spokesperson said: "The Club also extends its thanks and gratitude for the dedication of departing board members John Katz, Gareth Farrell, and Dave Curtis, who is departing the club after years of service across various roles, and we wish him the best in all of his future endeavours."

Mr Johnson is a member of the ownership group of Major League Soccer team Minnesota United and is also the former vice chairman of National League side Dagenham & Redbridge FC. Minnesota United FC are a highly-credited Western Conference Major League Soccer team. Contemporary successes have come most recently in 2019, where the team reached the finals of the oldest ongoing soccer competition in the USA, the US Open Cup.

The acquisition of Woking FC puts the club on a more secure financial base. Just last year, the Surrey football team not far from going into administration, this would have disqualified them from competing in the current 2024/25 National League season. Fortunately, then club majority-owner Drew Volpe received a loan from his parents which allowed him to register Woking FC to compete in the league.

Woking FC were founded in 1887, and currently play their home games at The Laithwaite Community Stadium (previously known as Kingfield Stadium), with a capacity of more than 6,000. Last month it was revealed the stadium would get an upgrade with foodcourt containers approved. Seven shipping crates serving food and drink will be placed throughout the ground to enhance game day for fans.

The team are currently having a relatively unexceptional season in terms of their playing form, sitting 17th of 24 in the National League, just five points off the relegation zone, with rivals Aldershot Town FC just one point behind them. The Vanarama National League is the fifth highest football league in the UK and is the lowest division which operates at a national level.
