Mike Williamson admits fresh firepower is the top priority in the transfer market now as Carlisle United seek more help to beat relegation.

The Blues head coach, who is facing calls for his head from fans, is hoping to make more breakthroughs soon in the January window.

Williamson has already signed three midfielders in Elliot Embleton, Callum Whelan and Will Patching, the first two of whom made their debuts in the 1-0 defeat at Tranmere Rovers.

After the defeat further exposed Carlisle’s goalscoring struggles, the News & Star asked Williamson if firepower was now top of his transfer wishlist.

“Yes, it is,” he replied simply.

Asked if anything was close regarding signings, he said: “I hope so. I need to speak to Rob [Clarkson, sporting director].

“He's working very hard with the owners, and we've got a couple of things that are spinning, but at this moment, I'm not sure.

“There’s a lot of work going on. I can't comment on who we're close to yet. We're hoping to get two or three or four bodies through the door as soon as possible.”

While attack is the focus, and Altrincham's Regan Linney one name mentioned in some circles, Williamson has also been linked with another midfielder, with reports claiming the Blues are interested in the MK Dons midfielder Stephen Wearne. Ex-West Bromwich Albion and Sheffield Wednesday wide man Adam Reach, a free agent, has also been linked.

The United head coach did not respond specifically to any names.

Asked if any more midfielders were indeed on the agenda, he added: “We’re always looking to increase the quality in all areas and that's just where we're at.

“So, there's many things going on, we’re speaking to many people, but at the minute, we're just where we are.”

Embleton and Whelan both went straight into the side at Prenton Park as rock-bottom Carlisle slipped six points adrift of safety.

Williamson felt Whelan was “the best player on the pitch” in United’s defeat.

On the two debutants, the head coach said: “it was a difficult game. I thought they both worked their socks off and I thought you could see glimpses of both as well.

“Whelo played the full game, which is positive, and we had to look after Elliot, but I think their quality will come through.”
