Firm Newcastle United transfer decision made as summer window plans begin
Newcastle United should offload nine current members of the first-team squad in the summer transfers - according to the results of our latest fan survey. With the winter window now closed for business, attention has turned firmly to plans for the summer.
The United hierarchy plan in well in advance, and work with several windows in mind, but the focus will be on what they can do in the close season after opting not to spend in January, PSR and FFP regulations have tied the club's hands somewhat, with senior figures determined not to risk any points penalties for breachng spending rules.
That will mean more exits in the summer to help increase the transfer kitty, following the sales of Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly in recent weeks. Head coach Eddie Howe does not have the luxury of a big squad to work with, so some difficult decisions will have to be made in the coming months.

United are determined to hang on to their star players, such as Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, while adding to their squad with first-team quality signings. That could mean moving on several squad players, if the price is right, to help fund significant arriivals.
We asked you which of the current squad you would keep in the summer, and which ones would perhaps be surplus to requirements, and the results threw up some interesting outcomes. The least surprising is who falls in to the 'keep' category.
Nine players received more than 95 per cent 'keep' verdict, and no one will be surprised to see Sandro Tonali leading the field with an impressive 99.2 per cent wanting him to stay. He is joined by Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall, Alexander Isak, Lewis Miley, Sven Botman, Tino Livramento, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes in that top echelon.
There was also firm backing for of Dan Burn, Jacob Murphy and Fabian Schar, who received over 90 per cent backing, while both Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka had postive results.
Anyone who receives over 50 per cent backing falls into the 'keep' category, so it was a close call for Kieran Trippier, who impressed in a rare start against Arsenal last week, and Harvey Barnes, who has failed to establish himself as a first-team regular after a big-money move from Leicester. Last weekend's FA Cup goal hero Joe Willock also just scored a 65.5 per cent keep vote.
However, it's at the bottom end of the scale where some eye-catching results fall. Only Alan Shearer and Alexander Isak have more Premier League goals for United than Callum Wilson, but with his contract up in the summer, most fans have indicated that his time at the club should come to end.
He joins club captain Jamaal Lascelles, midfield stalwart Sean Longstaff and left-back Matt Targett in the 'sell' section, with goalkeepr Odysseas Vlachodimos bottom of the pile. The Greek shot-stopper has only featured once for United, but could be sold in the summer to recoup some of his transfer fee.
