First York & Distriction Badminton Tournament in two decades proves to be a success
TWO decades on from their last bout, the York & District Badminton Tournament was a tremendous success.
The tournament took place on Sunday, January 19, and was thoroughly enjoyed by over 80 players from across the city of York and its surrounding towns.
It was held at the Railway Institute with all nine of the available courts being busy from 9am to 5pm, as players from ages ranging from 14 to 67 years old competed in multiple categories.
The categories contained Open Doubles and Ladies Doubles in the morning session, before a mammoth Mixed Doubles competition throughout the rest of the afternoon.
Maximum participation was the the theme, with all players who did both sessions battling their way through16 games, equivalent to three and a half hours of hard work.
The tournament was commended by many for being so well organised, and the league will gain and review feedback from all of the players.
This is to help improve potential future events, including singles tournament.
The tournament included BWF (Badminton World Federation) approved feather shuttlecock, with a knockout format taking place.
It got underway from 9am, when doors opened, before coming to an end at approximately 4.30pm.
Speaking to the Press, Richard Samuels, Chair of the York & District Badminton Tournament, enthused: "Thanks for the success of the day, for all of the administration and associated ordering for the day, goes to League Committee members Hazel Winfield, Mat & Angie Hobman, plus R.I. stalwarts Mike Poulter and Maragaret Sinclair."
Samuels presented the trophies to the winners during the day, starting with the Open Doubles Champions.
They were Nathan Robinson and Joseph Lam, whilst Aripin Marhadi and Jeremy Smith were the Open Doubles runners up.
Karen Broster and Deepika Thommandru celebrated winning the Ladies Doubles, with the runner's up being Melanie Bond and Kate Dance.
Finally, there was the Mixed Doubles, which Thommandru and Lam were victorious in again to round off a fantastic day.
Runners up for the Mixed Doubles were Hannah Grannon and Bradley Okopskyj.
