It was a quiet January transfer window for Leeds United with no new arrivals coming through the door at Elland Road over the month. It wasn’t for the lack of trying at the club though.

The Whites showed interest in both Cameron Archer and Adam Armstrong of Southampton in the final days of the window. While the former stayed at St Mary’s, the latter completed a late deadline day move to West Bromwich Albion.

Daniel Farke was keen to add to his attacking options over the window. There was also eyes on adding a centre-back to the squad.

One way of still fulfilling those wishes is to turn to the free agent market. Players without a club are able to sign for new sides outside of the transfer window, as long as teams have space in their squads.

With that in mind, here’s a look at five current free agents that Leeds could potentially turn to.

Daniel Amartey

In his search for a centre-back, Farke could turn to Daniel Amartey. The Ghana international has experience in English football, having spent seven-and-a-half years with Leicester City.

He moved to Besiktas on a free transfer in the summer of 2023, but left the club just over a year later and has been without a club since September.

The 30-year-old is known for his pace and can play in either centre-back position, at right-back, or even in defensive midfield. He was in and out of the team in the Premier League during his time at Leicester, but could be a useful addition for a Championship promotion push.

Nathan Ferguson

Ferguson has been without a club since leaving Crystal Palace in the summer. At just 24-year-old he’s at a good age with still room to improve.

The defender was a regular for West Bromwich Albion in the Championship before moving to Palace in the summer of 2020. Injury disrupted his time at Selhurst Park, with the player making just one first team appearance before being released in the summer.

Oscar Romero

Farke was also on the lookout for a number 10 in the January window, it’s the position that Romero has played most in his career, but he has also made appearances on both wing, in centre-forward and has even dabbled in playing in defensive midfield. His versatility could come in handy.

The Paraguay international left Brazilian side Botafogo at the start of the January window. Signing the 34-year-old would be a slight risk with his only time playing in Europe came in a loan spell with Spanish side Alaves back in 2017, where he provided just one assist in 20 appearances for the club.

Gerard Deulofeu

The forward is a name who will be familiar to fans due to his time with both Everton and Watford. He was released by Italian side Udinese earlier last month after failing to make an appearance for the club this season.

The spaniard has played 127 times in the Premier League, scoring 20 goals and providing 21 assists. He is comfortable playing in any position along the front line.

Maxi Gomez

The 28-year-old forward has been a free agent since leaving Trabzonspor back in the summer. He spent the previous season on loan with La Liga side Cadiz, but failed to scored in 33 appearances for the club, which is not great reading.

The striker has however proven that he can find the back of the net, scoring 31 times in 75 appearances during his time at Celta de Vigo and 22 times in 109 appearances with Valencia.

If Leeds could help him rediscover that sort of form, then he could prove to be a clever pick up on a free transfer.
