Willie Peters has indicated that five players are battling it out for the final spot in the Hull KR matchday squad on Friday. With a fully fit squad at his disposal, Peters has a number of tough decisions to make ahead of the Super League opener against Castleford Tigers.

Sixteen spots in the side appear to be locked in for Friday, however, the Robins boss is deliberating his preferred final bench option, with a number of players pushing to secure the role.

Last week, it was Kelepi Tanginoa who got the nod, with the back-rower rewarding Peters with a try in the Challenge Cup win over York. However, it's unclear whether that will be enough to see him retain his spot this week.

Explaining his thought process, Peters said: "I think the major one is around how you go with the last interchange spot.

"There's a lot of players that could be in that position. Do you go for another middle, another back-row or a utility back? There's a 17 that gets picked but when there's rotation, sometimes players won't get a lot of time, sometimes they won't play, which is part of interchange and rotation.

"We're going to go with 17 players that can do a job this week but there's going to be players that will miss out that could easily be in the team as well."

Peters named the players that were all under consideration this week, all of whom offer something different.

"There's guys, Kelepi, Sam Luckley, Jack Broadbent, Eribe Doro and Jack Brown, that are in contention for that last spot. It just depends on what we're looking for in terms of our rotation. It's not an easy one but one you want to have as a coach. We want to build a competitive squad, that's what we've got at the moment."

Peters will have the final say on the decision but the selection will ultimately be determined by the entire coaching team, who debate all calls week-to-week.

"I've got coaching staff and we talk around team selection every week, they have a say then it comes to me at the end. We tend to go with the majority in terms of what they're saying but most of the time we're on the same page because we look at training, we see what they do each week.

"As I said, there are certain players who will miss out that could easily be in that 17. Unfortunately, some have to miss out and when you're telling players they're not playing, it's not an easy process and something I don't enjoy doing."
