Five players who must move this transfer window – and the clubs in dire need of reinforcements

Marcus Rashford, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Ben Chilwell and Mikel Arteta

With one week remaining of the Premier League’s winter transfer window, there are plenty of players and clubs who still need to conduct important transfer business. Here, Telegraph Sport lists five Premier League players who need a move and five clubs who need to make signings before the 11pm deadline on Monday, Feb 3.

Marcus Rashford

It could be argued that no player in English football is more in need of a transfer than Marcus Rashford, who has not been involved in a match-day squad for six weeks. The Manchester United forward is far too good for that, although Ruben Amorim’s latest comments would suggest the 27-year-old is not exactly helping himself behind the scenes.

Surely a player of his quality can find an alternative club, most likely on loan, in the next few days? Otherwise, one of the finest attackers in Europe faces the prospect of another six months without competitive football. That would not suit him or his club, who are paying him an enormous salary to do nothing of note.

Ben Chilwell

Like Rashford, Ben Chilwell is an England international who currently does not play football. The Chelsea left-back was part of his club’s infamous “bomb squad” at the start of the season and he has made only one appearance in all competitions this campaign. It could not be more clear that Chelsea do not want the 28-year-old.

Chilwell, therefore, needs to get his career back on track this month, if he does not want to spend an entire season without meaningful competitive action. As with Rashford, the big issue is with Chilwell’s wages: he earns around £200,000 a week. Would a buying club be willing to take on that salary? A loan, similar to Raheem Sterling’s move to Arsenal, feels more likely.

Oleksandr Zinchenko

The signing of Riccardo Calafiori and the emergence of the talented Myles Lewis-Skelly have resulted in Oleksandr Zinchenko tumbling down the pecking order at Arsenal. Not so long ago, Zinchenko was a key player and one of the first names on the team sheet. This season, though, he has started only two games in the Premier League.

As reported by Telegraph Sport last week, Zinchenko is now expected to leave Arsenal before the end of this window. Borussia Dortmund are known to be among the interested clubs. The Ukraine international is contracted until the summer of 2026, which means Arsenal are running out of time to secure a meaningful transfer fee.

Evan Ferguson

Once the most highly-rated young striker in the Premier League, Evan Ferguson’s momentum has stalled because of injury issues and the numerous changes that have taken place at Brighton. He now finds himself behind João Pedro, Danny Welbeck and Georginio Rutter in the pecking order.

If Ferguson can stay fit, a change of club could help to reignite his career in the second half of this season. As reported by Telegraph Sport, there is interest from West Ham United, among other teams in the Premier League, and also from Germany.

Carney Chukwuemeka

Another Chelsea player who needs more minutes is midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka. The 21-year-old has made only five appearances in all competitions this season, and none in the Premier League. Chukwuemeka cost £20 million when he signed from Aston Villa as an 18-year-old. He could be targeted by Everton before the window closes, while there has also been reported interest from Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal

There is no doubt that Arsenal need another forward, with Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka both out injured. Mikel Arteta has been clear about his desire for more attacking players.

With only a few days remaining of the window, though, there has been no sign of an arrival. Benjamin Sesko is a long-term target but RB Leipzig have insisted that he is not for sale. Could that yet change, if Arsenal produce the right offer? It seems increasingly unlikely.

Arsenal cannot take a player on loan from another Premier League club as they have already signed goalkeeper Neto and Raheem Sterling on such deals. A foreign loan is possible, however.

Everton

New Everton manager David Moyes is looking for attacking and midfield reinforcements. Everton are exploring the possibility of sending Armando Broja back to Chelsea and signing an alternative player from the London club, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka of interest. Another midfielder of interest to Everton is Sunderland’s Dan Neil.

The need for new players has been made more pressing by injuries to striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and midfielder Orel Mangala in this weekend’s 1-0 victory over Brighton.

Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou is under mounting pressure and there is no doubt that his overstretched squad, which has been ravaged by injuries, needs additional bodies.

Postecoglou has declared this publicly, saying after Sunday’s defeat by Leicester City: “I’ve said all along, the players need help and I’ve also said the club are working hard in that area to try to alleviate some of those problems.

“Even one more player coming in, just in the short term, will give us an opportunity, at least to navigate these last 10 days, two weeks, of what’s been a really hard slog for this group of players.”

As reported by Telegraph Sport on Monday, Southampton winger Tyler Dibling and Lille midfielder Angel Gomes are two players on Tottenham’s radar.

Aston Villa

Unai Emery wants to strengthen his defence, following the sale of Diego Carlos to Turkish side Fenerbahce this month. Key defender Pau Torres is out with a long-term issue and Tyrone Mings suffered an injury against West Ham on Sunday. Villarreal defender Juan Foyth, once of Tottenham Hotspur, is of interest. Foyth played under Emery in Spain.

West Ham United

West Ham’s recent bid for Villa striker Jhon Durán provided further proof of their need for a new centre-forward this month, following the long-term injury suffered by Michail Antonio. Niclas Füllkrug is also out, with a serious hamstring injury.

Evan Ferguson is a player on their list, while West Ham have also looked at RB Leipzig’s André Silva and Ajax forward Brian Brobbey. Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is another potential option.
