Fleetwood Town boss Pete Wild claimed the officials failed to “do their jobs” in the build-up to Carlisle United’s winning goal.

The home side’s manager insisted the ball had gone out of play before Jordan Jones headed it on as the Blues went on to force the corner from which their winning goal came.

Jones’ header was followed by a run and cross from Joe Hugill which saw Kadeem Harris’ finish saved.

The resulting set-piece came out to Sean Fusire, who crossed for Sam Lavelle to head the winner as Carlisle prevailed 2-1 at the Highbury Stadium.

Former Barrow boss Wild used part of his post-match interviews to highlight what he felt was an error by the officials.

“I was really happy with how we were trying to break them down and how we were creating chances [after the equaliser],” Wild said.

“We had two kicks off the line in the last period and [looked like] we were finishing the game strongly.

“They then break away, the lad [Jones] heads it off the pitch, and it’s clear – everybody’s going, ‘That’s a throw-in to us’, [but] it leads to their corner and they score from it.

“As much as we should defend, and deal with that, if the liner does his job and gives us a throw, that doesn’t happen.

“They are the moments in games that officials are paid to do their job and they haven’t done it.”

Lavelle’s goal came after Ronan Coughlan cancelled out Cedwyn Scott’s Carlisle opener.

The Fleetwood scorer was stretchered off after being hurt in a challenge that came in as he scored.

Wild, speaking to the BBC, said of the striker: “It’s an achilles injury, it doesn’t look great and he’s probably going to need to be assessed in hospital.”

The Fleetwood boss, after United curtailed the Cod Army’s positive spell of three wins in five, admitted his side did not start well against Mike Williamson’s men.

“I was quite clear with everyone through the week that if we were half a yard off it, we’d get beat,” said Wild, whose team dropped two places to 15th.

“I didn’t think we started great and we gave Carlisle a leg up in the game.

“We looked tired. We’ve put a lot of effort into this week. So it was a tough ask to go again, but you have to.

“When we finally decided to get going I thought we finished the first half really strongly. I felt better going into half-time. We then changed shape, tried to get more people higher up the pitch and it worked, it was a case of when we were going to score.

“We were back to where we want to be – on the front foot, attacking teams.

“When we scored, we tried everything to win the match but got hit with a sucker punch. We haven’t shut the back door and we’ve been done.

“But that can be avoided if the officials did their jobs at the end.”
