Floodlight failure halts Warrington Town cup match early
WARRINGTON Town are through to the next round of the Cheshire Senior Cup despite an early finish to their first-round tie.
With Yellows 3-1 up at Cammell Laird with just three minutes of the game left, Kirklands was plunged into darkness by floodlight failure.
Both sides agreed to bring the game to an early conclusion and the result will stand, meaning Town book a clash with Stockport County in the next round.
After Joe Rodwell-Grant had opened the scoring, Mikey O'Neill netted a goal in each half for Paul Carden's side, who bring an 10-match winning run in all competitions to an end.
Carden sent a strong side featuring several first-team regulars to the Wirral for the game and as expected, they were in command from the off against a side from four divisions below them.
Having already seen a close-range effort saved in the early stages, Rodwell-Grant gave Town the lead with an arrowed left-footed finish after he had been sent through by Dana Amaral, who took his chance to impress in midfield.
Amaral was also central to Yellows' second, winning the ball back and swiftly delivering it to O'Neill, who cut back onto his right foot to curl home from outside the box.
Town continued to dominate, with Finlay Cross-Adair and Ollie Southern denied by blocks on the line during the same corner sequence while after the break, the former was foiled at close range by keeper Josh Brooks.
Out of nothing, however, Cammell Laird halved the deficit when Jamie Eaton swept home from close range after Dan Atherton had denied Tom Haynes.
Still, Town retained control and after Brooks had produced a fine one-on-one save to deny substitute Josh Amis, O'Neill arrived late in the box to slide home Josh Miles' cross to seal victory.
Shortly afterwards, the floodlights went out and both teams agreed to an early finish and for the result to stand.
