Matty Taylor said he was pleased to be back in Michael Flynn’s starting line-up for Cheltenham Town’s 2-1 victory over Cambridge United in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night.

The striker scored the equaliser and then set up Arkell Jude-Boyd for the winner to take Michael Flynn's Robins through to the last 16, picking up £20,000 in prize money in the process.

Taylor revealed his frustrations of not being given as much playing time as he would have liked recently.

“It’s frustrating not playing, I'll be open and honest about that, and the gaffer knows that," he said.

“When I do get on the pitch, I’ve just got to try and perform like that.

“I thought I played well tonight, so we'll see - it’s food for thought for the gaffer and hopefully I get the pitch again soon.”

Taylor believes that George Miller, who has been Flynn’s favoured choice at centre forward, suits the manager’s system better.

“He probably suits our style of play more, he chases lost causes and works hard, probably a lot harder than a 35-year-old me," Taylor said.

“The gaffer has worked with him before and we've been getting results, so you can't really complain, can you?"

On his goal, Taylor said: “I just gambled. I think Bradders (Tom Bradbury) knocked it back and got a good contact and it's gone in the corner.

“It was nice to see it go in and then, obviously, Arks got a header as well. “I heard him shout at me five or six times saying, ‘I'm here, I'm here, cross it!’ but I knew I was chopping back and then just hoping he stayed onside to be fair.

“It was it was a good goal, a good move and a pleasing night's work.”

Cheltenham are on an impressive run of form and Taylor was pleased to use this Trophy game as a chance to keep that going for the league.

“We’ve had some good results in these past six or seven weeks and we want to keep that momentum going," he said.

“We want to go as far as we can in this competition, so we’ll see who we get in the next round, and we’ll try to win that and progress further but obviously we'll be switching our attention now to an important league game on Saturday.”

Cheltenham play Morecambe at home on Saturday (3pm).
