GREENOCK Juniors' management team are planning a friendly match this week as they look to build up the players' match sharpness ahead of their return to league action.

To the surprise of few, the Nock's Third Division clash away to Lugar Boswell Thistle was one of many West of Scotland Football League fixtures that fell victim to the cold snap on Saturday, with the bitterly cold weather meaning only three games across all five divisions went ahead.

The prolonged spell of sub-zero temperatures mean Greenock are one of many WOSFL sides who have been out of action since before Christmas, with the freezing weather having also put paid to their trip to Springburn to face Finnart on January 4.

It was fairly clear from the middle of last week that the trip to East Ayrshire was in serious doubt so as a fallback plan, the management team managed to book indoor facilities at Largs for training on Saturday and are planning a friendly this week as part of the preparations for this Saturday’s match against Glasgow University at the Excelsior Stadium, Airdrie.

The two teams' last meeting ended in a 1-1 draw at Ravenscraig on the opening day of the current campaign back in July, while two seasons back, Greenock and Glasgow served up a very high quality 2-2 draw at the North Lanarkshire venue - meaning there is every reason to hope for a similar standard of game, with the Nock aiming to take all three points this time against their mid-table opponents.

Nock's fine run of league form towards the end of 2024, with Gary Fleming's men chalking up six Third Division wins on the spin, means they go into Saturday's game just four points adrift of top spot, but with a game in hand on leaders Thorn Athletic, who are due to kick off their year on Saturday at home to Threave Rovers.
