A former Carlisle United player is part of the caretaker management team at Bolton Wanderers.

Julian Darby is part of a three-man interim regime following the departure of Ian Evatt.

Darby, who played for the Blues in the 2000/01 season, has stepped up from his academy coaching role.

He is joined by fellow academy coaches Andy Taylor and Andrew Tutte.

They will take charge of the League One side at Huddersfield Town this weekend as Bolton continue their search for a new manager.

Evatt this week left the Toughsheet Community Stadium after four-and-a-half years in charge, with Bolton ninth in the third tier.

Darby had a long playing spell for Bolton, making 346 appearances between 1986 and 1993 after coming through the ranks.

After spells at Coventry City, West Bromwich Albion, Preston North End and Rotherham United, he joined Carlisle in 2000 under Ian Atkins.

That proved the last spell of the midfielder's playing career as Darby made 22 appearances and scored one goal for the Cumbrians.

His solitary strike came in a 2-1 home defeat to Scunthorpe United, while Darby was also in the United side that faced Arsenal in a 1-0 FA Cup third round defeat at Brunton Park in January 2001.

His last appearance came in the 1-1 draw at Lincoln City in the penultimate game of the season which saw Carlisle dramatically secure Division Three safety.

He has since had coaching spells at Preston, Derby County, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United, and has spent the last nine years coaching in Bolton's academy.

The squad at Bolton includes the Cumbrian former United midfielder Kyle Dempsey, but he is currently sidelined with a knee injury.

Ex-Blues defender Gethin Jones is also in the Trotters' ranks.
