Former Carlisle United favourite Peter Murphy has been named Scottish League One manager of the month.

Murphy received the January award for an impressive spell at the helm of Queen of the South.

The 44-year-old steered the Dumfries outfit to an unbeaten month in the league which saw three wins and a draw.

That saw Queens climb the table and move further into the third-tier promotion race.

Accepting the award alongside coaches Alan Casey, Colin McMenamin and Jon Connolly, Murphy told the Doonhamers website: “I am honoured to accept the award on behalf of the club, staff and players who have shown what we can do as a team.

"However, the challenge is to try and achieve it again by having everyone working in the same direction for the second half of the season.”

A statement accompanying Murphy's award said: "Queen of the South boss Peter Murphy has been named Scottish League 1 Glen's Manager of the Month for January on the back of a successful month.

"The Doonhamers picked up ten points from a possible 12, beating Cove Rangers, Inverness CT and Dumbarton as well as drawing with Alloa Athletic."

It is Murphy's first such award since he joined Queens last summer after a seven-year spell in charge of Annan Athletic.

The Doonhamers, though, have made a losing start to February, Murphy's side beaten 2-1 at leaders Stenhousemuir on Saturday after a 1-0 reverse at Inverness Caledonian Thistle the previous weekend.

The Palmerston Park club sit fourth in the table after 24 games.

Murphy's squad includes the Carlisle United loanee Taylor Charters, plus ex-Blues man Brennan Dickenson, with Cumbrian defender Matty Douglas also on Queens' books.

The Queens boss is Carlisle's record outfield appearance holder from his spell with the Blues from 2001 to 2013.
