Former Chelsea and Tottenham star Gus Poyet has a shock new job. The former midfielder, who managed Brighton & Hove Albion and Sunderland in England is the new manager of K-League team Jeonbuk Hyundai.

Poyet had most recently been the manager of the Greece national team in 2022, guiding them to four wins from their opening four Nations League games before his temporary contract ended and was not renewed.

The Uruguayan has been a manager in a number of different countries during his managerial career, working in Greece, Spain, France, China and Chile as well as England. Now he will take in life in South Korea.

Jeonbuk Hyundai finished 10th in the K-League in 2024, having to endure the relegation play-offs as a result. They managed to beat Seoul E-Land 4-2 on aggregate to secure their place in the top division.

Poyet will have a tough job on his hands to get the team challenging higher up the division in 2025. He is not the only former Chelsea player to take up residence at Jeonbuk though, with Dan Petrescu in the role earlier this season before being sacked.

Speaking to the club's official website, the former Chelsea and Spurs man said: "Asia and the K-League stage are new challenges for me as a manager. I will work with the players and fans to make this challenge a success.

"I think that communication and trust can come before tactics and strategy in soccer. I will do my best to communicate with the players and gain the trust of the fans so that Jeonbuk Hyundai can be reborn as the best team in the K-League."

Former Spurs player Mauricio Taricco will join Poyet in South Korea as his assistant manager, having been with him at a number of clubs during his managerial career so far.
