Former Hull FC star Jamie Shaul given new Goole Vikings role ahead of first fixture
Former Hull FC full-back Jamie Shaul has been appointed vice captain of new League 1 club Goole Vikings. The now 32-year-old has linked up with the East Yorkshire outfit for the 2025 season, with another Black and Whites legend, Scott Taylor, coaching the side.
And Taylor, who has taken his first steps into professional rugby league coaching, has named Shaul as his vice, with former England international Brett Ferres appointed as the club's captain.
Both players were statement signings by Goole last year. The club are preparing for their first season in the third tier of professional rugby league, having seen their bid accepted by the RFL last autumn. They have a strong contingent of former Hull FC players in their squad, including Reece Dean, Jack Aldous, Callum Rutland, Jeylan Hodgson, Lennon Bursell, and Mackenzie Harman.

Meanwhile, Shaul's appointment comes just three months after his return to the professional game. He retired in 2023 after a superb career at Hull FC, where he scored the winning try at Wembley as the club won the 2016 Challenge Cup final. Since then, he has been playing rugby union in Hull but will now step back into league this season.
Speaking on the appointments, Taylor outlined the duo's qualities for the role. He said: "Both players are strong leaders and role models for our club, and two people we can trust, lean on, and who will give us honest feedback.
"Brett’s experience speaks for itself; he has led from the front since day one, he talks well, and he has helped bring our group together. He knows what it takes to be successful."
Taylor added, "Jamie has been leading the group at training and will set an example on the field, guiding the young lads and bringing us direction. He has been a good support for me in my first season as head coach. They will both be fantastic ambassadors from the club on and off the field."
Goole are in action this Sunday afternoon for the first time as a professional club. They head to Featherstone Rovers for a pre-season friendly. Their first competitive fixture will be in the capital, taking on London Broncos in the Challenge Cup at Rosslyn Park.
